Am I still welcome here. I’ve been off the net recently for some personal issues. But rather not share it. Anyways, nice post.
Gtg.
That I know of, Markymark, you are still welcome here. Come and play.
I’ve never been to the countries on the list except Canada & Denmark. I’ve been to Ottawa & Montreal & they are very beautiful cities. I didn’t think Copenhagen was that interesting because all you can see there are the Little Mermaid Statue & Hans Christian Andersen’s home. I did not like the hotel where I stayed.
Hi Pink.
Recommended.
I am surprised that Australia is not in the top 10 and surprised that New Zealand is.
I say that because there are HEAPS of Kiwi’s living HERE in AU and there MUST be viable reason for that move?
Hi Kizmet.
I’m very surprised that “kradek” is allowed to continue posting on this channel. This person is in clear violation of channel policy

Of all those countries, Iโve only been to the Netherlands. A lot of workers there werenโt all that nice, but I wouldnโt say that reflects on Holland as a whole. The only holiday Iโve been on where I genuinely noticed locals being really happy and nice was Barcelona, Spain. A lot of illegal street merchants there, thoughโฆ
The bullshyt began with the first comment. Conservatives will question everything about this but won’t consider that people want society to provide equal opportunity and upwards mobility. All these nations excel in this. The US has essentially zero upwards mobility. Opportunity is reserved for those who can pay for it and 40% of voters favor fascism, racism and corruption.
The difference, great nations have socialism for people. The US only has socialism for the rich.
I concur.๐
You still mad?
๐
I advised you to work, save, and invest. But you’re determined to carry on with distorting, angry partisan and identity politics. On a neutral channel too!
๐คญ
Your insistence raises my happiness index. It’s easier to get the choice jobs and investments when you won’t. Thanks my brother. It’s a noble gift.
Lastly, by all means, try those great nations. Book your plane ticket. Take part in their socialism for people. PS: Ignore the legions of immigrants coming here and thanking God for it.
Very well said! Tip of my cap to you, sir.
This guy is well meaning but a clown. I’ve encountered him on other channels. Is angry with an axe to grind. Clearly not happy, blaming an entire country and what he perceives to be its system. Whatever.
Hard to argue with that statement. I agree, the two above should take it to another channel. I’d love to discuss it in greater detail https://media2.giphy.com/media/dEvfjRZG0Fcn6/giphy.gif
me too
The system is bad, harmful, exploitive, wage slavery, class exploitation by the rich, harmful to the people. destructive to the ecology, all of that, good reason to be angry about it.
Tag me for a more appropriate place to discuss it.
We are mad about a system literally created to impose poverty on a majority so we are wage slaves to the rich, yes a bit mad about our lives being stolen by the rich so they can have orangeries.
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b0dbdafaa158d909e30f3b34fa5bb68285415de001d6eddc446bf68bbf8ce2ea.jpg
Yes, people are angry about exploitation and to mock people for being angry is to be working for the exploiters.
Snide partisan and identity politics on a neutral channel deserve some good natured mockery. Regardless, here’s a sage suggestion: take it to the proper channels, where somebody might take up your pretty easy to refute nonsense.
๐
I am speaking about reality. Not “snide” and not “identity politics” in the sense you probably use that term. What’s your problem and why do you want me to shut up?
What’s “proper channels” and why can’t i just write comments here like you?
My stuff is not refutable because it’s correct, by the way. This is real history. Primary sources. What people actually said. Why do you hate it so?
Because this isn’t the site you can freely express your anger and bash anyone.
You may post those kind of angry comments on other sites, not here.
https://myneutralchannel.com/site-rules/
Donโt worry, be happy.
๐
Actually I moved to and live in a resort destination to get away from a reprise of30’s Germany and fascists in red hats. Your cackling stupidity is meaningless to me.
๐ด
Many of your comments contain rule violations. I removed one comment with an image to insult the President. No bashing no insult is acceptable on here. This is a warning for you to behave or I will ban you.
Chuckling…. Since this is not a channel that promotes political discussion, I won’t comment further.
LaLa Land doesn’t exist, lol
If only you had the ability to communicate. This is important. Do we continue to run the nation for the sole benefit of the rich?
We continue to follow the Constitution. If yo do not like that, our founding fathers were very clear in their instruction to us in the Preamble of the Declaration of Independence of what to do when it becomes unsatisfactory. That is all I have to say about it here. If you want to continue, tag me elsewhere
May I just say ….. your country.
Edited for restricted word.
1 hour left
Tim mentioned about you before he deleted his account.
Murn ๐ Dont make me get rude ok …. I’m sure he did …. the clown….. No comment cause I dont have anything nice to say really …..
Surprised I am still able to even comment here ……
Of course, you are.
There is no reason to ban you. Unless you violate the rules.
hmmmmm thank you so very much
You are most welcome.
I edited one of your comment with restricted word so I can approve it.
The site rule also mentions for no swearing/cursing…:))
We try to make this channel as happy and fun as possible.
๐ hahaha have a great day goodbye
Tim was our friend on here and he is still now.
Friends here like him so we don’t care what he did or what happened in the past, it’s not our business. Just be good on here and we can be friends too.
I really hate being told what to do ๐ I tend to do the opposite …. but sure whatever ๐ I dont really care what you think of Tim just as you dont care what I think ๐ ….. But when you tell me that he mentioned me before deleting himself … that makes sense …. the paranoia never left even when I did
Did you use other name before? Do I know you?
I’ve been here since April 2016.
I’m not sure do you know me? Ive been around for a while …. hmmm so many names…. NAA…. Apple Strudel….. and a few others……. I was originally on Infowars with Tim…. and ya …. ๐ …… anyway Im only looking for something Ill never find…… TIm is the last thing that interests me though it is still funny to hear
And you are female right?
No I am a male….. last time I checked……
damn I need to change my profile pic after that question
THere we go
I can tell you what countries I am happy not to be living in
These lists are fake. Look at the criteria. If it were purely going on contentedness and such, places like India would be on there.
Unfortunately, your country rank ‘140. India (4.015)’
Itโs not my country and government spending + new car sales doesnโt equal happiness.
Herro Murn ๐ India has a shite ton of weed
I don’t know.
If you are serious about farming them, go to Afghanistan.
They have acres of weed and cannabis farming.
HAhaha True they grow some incredible weed there …. Im not a farmer ๐ Im a consumer
Why. I think your post is beyond lame. Ever been to India…or anywhere?
The stupid make statements as if they were facts but provide no support for their stupidity. This is jusy what you’ve done

My country is not on the list. However, I have been to 30+ countries and I feel the USA is the best. With that said, I have not been to many of the countries listed in the top 10, so I am open to saying my opinion is somewhat biased. I am particularly interested in seeing the Netherlands, Finland and Norway.
USA !๐บ๐ธ From Sea to Shining Sea !
Yay…. Happy Donna…:))
And happy morning.

Good morning, Tim..:))
US doesn’t make the 10th happiest list but it’s the 10th place ranking for income, 12th place for generosity. It’s great. ๐
Not great in my reckoning. A land of exploitation built on genocide and slavery and the domination by the rich.
Wink…
He posted some angry comments.
I have to edit some of them and warn him.
Thank you for your patience..:)
You are very kind, Murn. The channel rules are clear, and it’s obvious a couple of people have no regard for them. I could never be a mod, because my patience for ignorance is very limited. I commend you!
Good morning, my friend.
I was just going to ask if you would like to help moderate this site…:))

Great horse race.

I want to live where the tusk ah loosah.
ok
I am happy to live in the NL (nr 5).
I made you a trusted user.
Thanks for coming in.
How wonderful. But what makes you so happy to live in your country?
Thanks
Despite the cold temperate sea climate the Netherlands have become a great place to live.
– We have a lot of personal freedom for both religious people and LHBGT-commnity
– A good investment climate for entrepreneurs and innovations
– Government is pragmatic (consensus culture is still dominant) and there is little corruption.
– We enjoy a good social fabric and -apart from that safety net (good accessible social services).
– Like the others countries in the Top 10 the public services (infrastructure, education, health care and public services) have high quality and crime is relatively low (without becoming boringly strict). F.i. the annual school fees are limited
– We are reasonably good in international sports (top 10 Olympics), a rich cultural life and traditions
– Most cities and villages have and acceptable size (no cities above one million inhabs) but high service level
– We have strong worker and consumer protection
– Most Dutch speak English and French, German or Spanish as well
On a personal level, at least in this country, being 6 foot four, does not make me exceptional.
Drawbacks:
– Relatively high taxes (37% average),
– We cherish our โcomplain cultureโ (but the US has surpassed us lately ;))
– Winter days are short (52 degrees latitude)
– We have too many pigs, chickens and cows per square Km. More than any other country in the world.
Those are the dream of almost every citizens. No wonder you make it rank 5.
And also I read that no matter the season, you bike all over the city of Amsterdam, where visitors can stroll over the canals that protect the city, this makes you all healthy people.
Except for the Nederlands and New Zealand, the countries listed are very cold.-50 F makes for a cooperative society.
Cold, that’s true.
But those on the top list fulfil the criteria to be the happiest place to live.
I suspect it is a strained definition of happiness.
I believe these top 10 countries are nice because of the Demographic. And their relatively Homogeneous populations. That is changing for them and is one the reasons the US is not listed as high as those on the top 10 list.
Tractor and Horse Chores beckon….I’ll be back after while, peace out
:-)๐ด๐
Wherever extra dark chocolate is the norm
1. cold 2. cold 3. cold 4. cold. 5. cold 6. cold 7. cold 8. cold 9. cold 10. cold.
ok, now I’m cold from jest readin’ the list… Wait, Is New Zealand cold? I googled it and not only is it NOT cold, but its beautiful.
Kiwis….
Auckland skyland and the homes of Frodo Beggins.
I’ll add seeing it one day to my Bucket List. Doesn’t mean I ever will, but it can’t hurt. Maybe having a Bucket List is a good start–aim one’s life in the right direction.
It’s a great start than having no plan.
See how beautiful that is.

[Thank you.]
That is a good spelling, Ellen..:))
I realized that my initial comments were flippant and cynical–huh–so I fixed myself ๐ … since this article is about happiness and there will be none to be found with an attitude like mine.
I see no problem there, no worries.
Sorry, I have to go. Will come back tomorrow.
Talk to you soon.
I wanna go there and do some fly fishing for big German Brown
I wouldn’t mind going there and watching people fly fish for “big German Brown.”
Actually…I’ve never been fly fishing. I wouldn’t mind trying it one day. Especially in the gorgeous places where one goes to fly fish …
I lived in Wisconsin for a while and had planned to one day try ice fishing. Not that I’m into fishing–or into ice for that matter–but I thought it could make for a fun story to tell afterward.
This is a world class fly water. I grew up not far from here and this is where I learned to swing https://youtu.be/K9pSUhwkI9Q
“Meticulous River” in Oregon. What a wonderful name. Made me think of “Deception Pass” up in Washington. I tend to fly (<– a pun!) off topic.
Ooh, a 12-pounder. He's huge! And what a lot of work! I love water, especially moving water. I spent my childhood in the countryside in upstate NY. Lots of brooks and streams there and this looks just beautiful. I bet it smells wonderful, too! Fresh water, fresh air.
"It's pretty well hooked obviously.. Oops, there it goes! It just came off, guys." Oh. the poor man.
I spent quite a bit of time in New York. Between Watertown and Saranac Lake mostly. Tupper Lake is nice, but I couldn’t find a Hot Buttered Rum worth dam in Lake Placid
It gets darn cold up there, doesn’t it? I had a boyfriend who did some climbing in the Shawangunks (The Gunks) by Lake Placid so I have seen some of that area, and I stayed in a cabin in Keene Valley one week years ago. No Good Hot Buttered Rum? What a shame!
The warmest it got for November was 8 below zero. I had rotorwash blowing down one at 30 knots from 160 feet, for about 90 seconds every couple minutes. I never got warm until April
So you were flying a helicopter, I guess (rotor wash?) oh gosh, that gave a chill just thinking about. Nope, I wouldn’t like that. Not at all.
Not a pilot, but in charge of a woods crew. look up heli-logging on youtube. 25 years, 28 states
Oh wow! I can see why they chose heavy-medal music to accompany the first video I watched! ๐ It looks dangerous. Really dangerous. (And you must have been in great shape–it actually looks like that climbing, banging against limbs, etc, could hurt. ow.) Dangerous for you, dangerous for the helicopter pilots, too.
I looked it up too, “reduces the environmental impact …”
I have to go feed my horses, but I think it would be fun to come back and bs about it a little, if you like
Looks like I missed you… maybe we can catch up later. It sounds like a interesting life to have led–28 states!
(And did you notice, that poor man in the fly-fishing video LOST THE FISH at the very end, after battling it for so long he couldn’t lift it out of the water to show to his kids?Oh.)
Frodo lived in the Shire. But now he is in Aman, with the Valar. I hope to find an Elven ship to take me there…eventually.
I am not in a hurry.
๐
Haha…. I know, right.
Go there and get ourselves immortal.
Live not only with Frodo and Gandalf but with those I like: Galadriel, Elrond, Aragon, Legolas. I miss those movies…:))
I see myself hanging out a lot with Lรบthien Tinรบviel. She’d demand the 3 Silmarils to give me the time of day. And you know what? I’d storm Morgoth and all the Valar to get them!
๐
That’s why the won’t let me in paradise, as I’d cause havoc. All for the hottest babe in all eternity.
Your choice is always the best.
She was the Morning Star of the Elves, the most beautiful creature ever existed in Middle-earth. Galadriel was her great grand daughter. And Arwen was her descendant.

Hi Ellen.
Hiya Purple.
How are you ? Hoz Life ?
Life is good.
Yeah. Danes Happy. This is a matter of definition and reporting. What they measured was societal and self reported satisfaction and stress. Culturally the Nordics do not complain and have an ethic of being satisfied with what you have, and an innate sense that you don’t deserve more than your neighbor. They also have a different sense of time, healthy, with a long view, while Americans have a time sense that is dysfunction ally both foreshortened and compressed but that is too esoteric to go into.
But joyful and ebullient which is how Americans see “happy”? Uh, I think not.
you mean they, um, don’t covet?
(good for them!)
Yes, Danes are happy, Europe dominate the list.
Nordic don’t complain because the country they live in provides what they need.
it’s a culture and mindset….but they have no independence either….Americans have lost much of our independence, so slowly it’s not observable….
Deep!
I absolutely see the connection….we need another Ice Age……xD……can’t get into trouble when you’re frozen half the yr…..lol….
=DD
No need to wait for another Ice Age, Iceland is there and it has all the conditions for not only a happiest but safest country too.
sadly….they’re running out of women….it’s rough when you smell like fish all the time….
it’s been since the Vikings that there were more men than women
They do have mainlands tho
unfortunately I’m a desert dweller….like a lizard on a hot rock….xD
Okay then, Sahara Desert sounds to be the best choice for you. =D
a few lost civilizations there….and at a time in recorded human history it was a grassland with rivers…..there is speculation of what lies underneath it….
Wow…. what treasure that might be in there or maybe an empire buried by mountains of sand.
the ‘true’ treasure of any desert region is water…..w/o that there is nothing….
True, but that’s not all under the sand.
they think there might be….way down in the rocks….like oil rig deep…..I remember some studies on it….but no more….there are studies coming out of the california desert to the same effect….
do you ever wonder, though, if we drill to deep and pull everything out of the center of the earth, it will collapse like a basketball that’s had all the air sucked out of it? (I’m kidding.)
well……not too far off…..there have been numerous earth quakes where there were numerous oil rigs, now dry…..liquid has it’s own physics of pressure, like using a hydraulic jack to lift a car…..drain the oil and it collapses…..
I’m in Florida and we have sink holes … and we ARE on the top of coral with an aquifer not too far below the surface. Mother Nature may one day “reclaim” the entire state if we don’t show her a little more respect ๐
the same process at work, while farmers drain it, there’s nothing to replace it, and limestone is a weak rock…..
I think it’s sensational when some archeologist digs up some treasure–like King Tut’s Tomb!–that was right under people’s feet all along. We think we know so much, know it all … we don’t.
there are many gaps in our history and knowledge….
on a camel wrapped with yards of fabric for protection from the sun … ?
(I don’t think I’d be happy)
=DD
It’s an exception for the desert people only.
they use very light silks….and you need it to protect from the UV radiation and cold desert nights….a land of extremes….
Ooh, I did not know that. And shame on me–honestly–for my ignorance. I’m sure it’s an absolutely beautiful place, a stunning sight to see, in its own way–as most places on this earth are, if one chooses to look for it.
one sees beauty where one sees it….some see a waste land, others don’t…. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/f5ae00e51ce63f9b44866b90ab5a1c06e85af568af0e17a4d13e3164f843bf12.jpg
That is gorgeous…
Incredibly beautiful.
Exactly!
We are going to face a Mini Ice Age.
it’s hard to say what we’re going to face…..but humans are adaptable….or else we still wouldn’t be here….
Try Minneapolis.
Does that explain Florida Man? Is it the heat…?
it’s the humidity…..xD
Do things which makes others Happy…
Such as creating blogs and giving away to the ones who need them..:)
Yes…. I Love to create Blogs and give it to one who is interested.
๐
How are you , Murn ?
Great choice Purp.
I’ve been busier, thinking about taking a break but we’ll see.
Taking a beak again ? ๐ Good.
And you are leaving, I hope you stay longer, Purp.
I need a fishing/guitar/ WTH blog….I don’t think there are one of those yet….
I will help.. you.
Yes, I haven’t seen one like it yet.
Why don’t you ask Purple to make you one?
lol…I’ll think on it…..
Thank You, Murn.
Great, I hope it’ll work as I know you are handy in it.
A guitar blog would be very nice.
lol….I’ve fixed enough……lol….some guy wants $200 for a nice acoustic he busted….I’ll offer $ 30 because of the amount of work it’ll take to fix it….lol…
Flippin’ guitars instead of houses, eh?
eh….maybe…..lol….idk….not that big a call for it, there seems to be less players now…..
My girlfriend–a big money-making account executive–bought her blue-collar husband a big fishing boat so that he could start a charter fishing business and do what he loves to do all day long, every day–FISH. Isn’t that something?!!
he’s a fortunate man….lol….but it does require license and inspections….but still nice…..lol…
It does require all that. But Mark. He goes fishing every single day and people pay him to do it. ๐ (lol is right)
in that area there’s a lot of competition….depending what you’re after…..I’m good at maps and navigation….but now it’s all GPS….lol….I’m more for the quiet fishing….more of releasing pressure than gaining it….but you guys got bugs the size of aircraft there…..xD
oh no we don’t have bugs the size of aircraft–at least not out on the water. (We won’t even mention the palmetto bugs. ok. too late. I mentioned them. But I have never seen a single one in the 5 years since I moved back here. People spray for them danged thangs, if they spot em … I’ve yet to spot them.)
My friend has his superb fishing spots all picked out–and wow, are they fierce in protecting their locations. He’s lost friendships over “stolen” fishing spots.
I don’t think I’d care for the competition, either. And I’ve never liked getting into a boat & plowing straight out into the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, either. I much prefer meandering along the coastline–in and around the mangroves, if possible.
I’ve heard of ‘fishing wars’…..up in the Chesapeake where’ I’m from they actually shot at each other….true….fixing guitars might be a better option…..xD
[ i think that’s called a culling of herd–I have no doubt at all that rabid fisherman probably shoot at each in Florida too. ]
I wouldn’t doubt it somewhere…..depending how much money is involved….
Those areas produce Tarpon too… Bonefish and Red Drum…
I’ve never had Red Drum. I had to look it up, “tastes like Red Snapper”… Someone kill me now. Red Snapper is to die for–meaty and sweet. And don’t forget Grouper found in the flats. There is nothing like it, fresh out of the Gulf, deep fried in a light, tempura-like beer batter. Or even just blackened… oh oh… seems like we had a long discussion about oysters once. I better stop before I go on and on and on …
Sea Bass isn’t bad either….lol…
lol haha… ๐ I agree…
Well it looks like Australia didnโt make the list. ๐ข
But one day soon, the whole world will be talking about this great land. ๐ฆ๐บ๐
Australia is no 11 out of 156 countries. Not bad tho….
Did Bernie Sanders have a hand in choosing these Socialist utopias? https://media2.giphy.com/media/YmartgzRP8KtRqKIgU/giphy.gif
Politic comments are welcome but no bashing.
Sorry, will have to edit your comment.
These countries are more capitalist than socialist despite what BS claims.
And most of them have conservative majorities (coalition governments).
I honestly believe, Happiness cannot be attained Materialistically though it does play a minor role in physical nourishment.
Real Happiness is with God & family. It might be hard to understand if you have a good family but definitely when you are older you will understand what gifts you had as a child was the biggest blessing one could get.
To me, People who are grateful and have a caring family is 1000 times more happier than the ones who have all the wealth in the world but with no family.
Money is not everything but everything need money..:))
I agree, believe that God is with us and family takes a very important role in achieving what we might call happiness.
Excellent post, Riz
Morning or afternoon.
Thanks Cys.
Just happy to see you although our country are not on the list..:))
Mid afternoon.
No matter. Hopefully happiness will find us, guided by that star of love
Yes, that’s true, happiness is everywhere, hope we’ll find it wherever we are.

Isn’t that wonderful?
You must be happy to live in a country that has everything…
Good to see you, MC..:)
And you. How have you been?
I’ve been okay, thank you.
And still in and out of here.
I have not seen your invites anymore..:))
I’ve been almost all political, so you’re on a group I don’t send political invites. I’ve also ignored my other non political channels. But I’ve not forgotten you.
That’s very wise of you that you know I don’t do politic chat.
Thank you…:))
Hello —-
Hey,
What do you mean?
Hi Murn.
Hello there, Purp.
I thought you were offline.
How are things going?
Happiest countries?
Not here. LOL!
You are at no. 19th…:))
Hi Murn..
Hi NN..
Hi, Purple!
One thing about these types of lists is that they are purely subjective regardless of any pretensions otherwise. After all, what are “social and institutional supports”? Does that mean a womb to tomb welfare state or the number of churches and church attendance?
And what is happiness? I like to say I’m happy because generally I’m not unhappy. I’m a philosophy major and I couldn’t begin to define happiness. How can a bunch of statisticians explain it? What I do think is that Plato was wrong and Aristotle was right when he said that our environment and wealth to play a part in our happiness, but the rest of it is something within ourselves.
Even though I can’t explain happiness, I think the stoic maxim of living according to nature is the key to attaining it. What this means is that we’re going to be our happiest when we live the way we socially and genetically are intended to live. This is hardly something that can be made into a statistic. It also means that when faced with adversity that we realize that at any particular moment, cause and effect mean things couldn’t be otherwise. Thus the Stoic belief that what we think about things is more important than what actually happens.
Good morning,
I’ll come back here and send the invites later or probably tomorrow..
Sorry.

Thanks for the invite Murn!
You are most welcome and thank you for contributing..:)
Once again, Murn, I’m unable to post on the music channel. . .?
me neither. + i boycott that site.
Why?
i couldn’t keep going to the music page cause of the very bad gif and when i mentioned that very politely i was viciously attacked and denigrated by the miri profile.
i had a weird feeling about the site before i must ad.
Hmmm . . .
no hmm about it.
I am glad you found the new music thread. Iโll go there later.
Asalam aleikum Murn, hope you’re fine.
I’m finding it hard to navigate through your channel these days
Salaam Zeid,
I hope you are well too.
Actually if you just click https://myneutralchannel.com/ you’d get here easy.
Thanks
I would be happier in a country that doesn’t live for you
I also think that there is a good amount of subjectivity on what constitutes the happiest. But I do think statistics are useful in suggesting improvements a country can make. A few that come to mind are GDP, per capita GDP, crime rates, and so. Especially when a society is so deficient here that it’s common sense many aren’t happy…implying structural improvements.
For me, material security is a base on which to build personal happiness. This implies a good job, basically the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness in society run by rule of law with decent social contract. If you have adequate food, drink, shelter, medical care, and opportunity…the rest follows.
I’m in the USA and happy. And yes, I believe I’m happier than most Finns or Swedes. They don’t know the happy food scene in the Bay Area. Delicious!
IM, I saw a study not too long ago that said that money can buy happiness–at least up until about $85K a year. After that, there are diminishing returns.
I’d also add that environment is important.
I’m reminded of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, with our materials wants and needs, and safety being at the bottom. I suppose it would be possible to be happy without these things, but I sure wouldn’t want to try it. Having said that, I think being really happy involves being accepted and loved by those in our lives. I’ve never understood those who are after nothing but money in life.
I agree. Being materially challenged causes stresses that hurt relationships. And yes, past a certain point, material wealth is just extra.
At scale, fostering material security is a serious task for a nation. It’s easier for Finland and Sweden with such small populations. As well as geographic context: as it’s easy when NATO and the USA effectively underwrite their defense.
Don’t get me wrong. Those are good societies. But I don’t buy extolling them at the expense of the USA…nor believe they’re uniformly happier.
If I may ask, what country are you from?
I see excessive wealth having a paradoxical effect and making its holders more miserable than anything else. Something else I was thinking of. I recall reading a long time ago that older black ladies were the happiest group in this country, and they are hardly the most affluent.
Originally Croatia (Yugoslavia) but came to USA as young boy. Iโve traversed the socioeconomic spectrum. Started poor but our family made upper middle class within a decade.
We never starved. Dad made a decent living immediately. Always marveled at how easy it was to make a living.
Because it was, or rather because we had the basics, we were fairly happy. Imperfect. But happy.
My parents knew extreme starvation poverty. Even then they found some happiness. But shuddered at the memory of starving and losing loved ones due to illness for lack of medical care.
It sunk into me. Iโm happy if I can make a decent living and provide for my family.
I was in Yugoslavia in 1989. I got to go to Dubrovnik before the old city was badly damaged. I also went to Mostar and Medjugorie. I enjoyed my time there. I noticed it was very poor, but unlike some other poor countries, what I saw was spotlessly clean. I was impressed.
Croatia today is wealthy enough but corrupt. So many young people leave to try their luck elsewhere. As buying a house is more difficult than ever, especially because of foreign investment.
Croatians culturally tend to be terse and cynical. And would score extremely low on a happiness index test. But fight to the end…for family, community, and Croatia.
Even when Croatians leave, they contribute to Croatia and plan on returning. How can that kind of happiness be measured?
It sounds to me as if Croatians have a strong sense of themselves as a distinct people. That is a good thing.
What struck me about that part of the world is that houses didn’t have yards; they had gardens. They raised most of what they ate–or at least appeared to.
Croatians are still strongly nationalist. In a positive way, evolving out of the extremism that once was among many peoples in the area. Many still have the gardens, but many unfortunately opt for the big chains now that we’re modern.
Many say they were happier when it was mostly the garden or local products…rather than the mass produced crap from bigger EU countries.
IM, my guess is that Yugoslavians were happier living off of their small plots and eating fresh foods. I know I’m happier when I’m living out of my garden. I think this is because we didn’t evolve to live in big cities and get our food from bags, jars, and cans. There is something deeply satisfying about raising one’s own food.
True. I happiest in my kitchen. If I had my way, I’d be preparing food all day.
Alas I have to work. I don’t mind my work. But meh happiness index goes way up when I cook, plate, and eat!
While you were there in 1989 did you see signs of the Civil War brewing? In 1989 I was finally old enough to Legally Drive a Kenworth. ๐ But a couple friends owned used Car lots. One of them had 2 Yugo’s he sold together. One of them ran perfect the other was for spare parts. And came with the warning that the parts were hard to get, due to Global politics. Your comment inspired me to look up why or who do that, Wikipedia says it was a UN embargo. I am very unfamiliar with the World Map. But in the Wikipedia thing about that Car, it mentions a lot of places, but the State of Calfornia was a player in it all too. I have never been farther than a few miles over our Border.
I will say that the Yugoslavians I spoke to weren’t happy. Their complaints seemed to be with their communist government rather than with each other. I once asked a group who their president was. They looked at each other and told me they didn’t know or care. At that time, the average wage was six dollars a day. People in the area I was in would save their meager earnings up so they could go to Italy to buy consumer goods their own communist economy couldn’t supply.
If you’ll recall, at that time, it was obvious that communism was rapidly changing under Perestroika and other reforms. But I don’t think anybody could have foreseen just how rapidly things did change, least of all Yugoslavians.
As far as automobiles go, I don’t know that much about them.
All I knew at the time was Communism was bad and went Trucking for a Global Van line here in the US only.
It was sorta like unofficial College in some ways because of the VIP’s that were involved after I figured out how to move everything without breaking anything and I bought my own Truck through an old timer at the Company that was a former Marine in Korea. Some of the things they all warned about are the Headlines Today. I am 99% they would like what Trump has Campaigned to do if they were still around.
But they were anti ELD and 10 hour rules. Did you know legally you cant get out of your Truck for the Restroom without logging it in the middle of the Mandated Rest time if it takes over 5 minutes? lol. Thats preTrump though, so they cant blame him. But that was/is? the Law any Officer could use to write a felony level ticket for a Trucker if they felt the need or were told they had to.
Captain, the ultimate test of whether communism was bad is the posterior test. Communism put up walls to keep its victims in. We need walls to keep the unwanted out.
How many liberals that have told us how wonderful things are in Venezuela, and how awful they are here? How mand of these liberals have put their money where their big mouths are and moved down there?
Most Yugoslavians were never forthcoming about either communism or nationalism. Saying the wrong thing could get you in trouble. No gulags, but your education and career prospects could suffer. There was a robust private underground economy too, where some of my uncles made a good living.
Many lived relatively well in Yugoslavia, with self sufficient if not state of the art industries. But it was on a house of cards of Western debt. When communism fell, banks came collecting. And then came the troubles, as unresolved nationalist issues came to the surface, having been suppressed for so long.
Croatians were determined to have a country given the window of opportunity. Inevitable. Serbia knew it and went for broke trying to carve out a greater Serbia, having possession of one of the largest conventional armies in the world at the time.
Croatians are much happier now having an independent country. As I said, Croatians are famously critical, cynical, and have dark humor. But love and live life happily, always with an eye of supporting and being in Croatia as much as possible…wherever we find ourselves, even down to the nth generation.
We’ll be around as long as there is a universe to host us, being bound by the laws of physics. But we’re looking to crack those as well.
๐
Sure but you’ve never lived in Finland or Sweden have you? You’re right it’s subjective but we also live with the reasonable expectation that we wont be shot dead buying a bottle of Wild Turkey…
How lucky for those who live in Finland or Sweden. Iceland is not only #4 the happiest country but also the safest.
I’m in Canada and while I love the US I would never live there.
I haven’t, but likewise many haven’t lived in the many countries I’ve lived in and visited. Given my experiences living and traveling abroad a lot, I’m skeptical about happiness indices. As I explained earlier, I’m more focused on statistics indicating how well a country provides for the basics…which is the foundation for more sophisticated forms of happiness.
I’ve lived all over the USA. Aside from crime ridden cities, I’ve never been afraid. Certainly of being shot. We have a high level of gun violence for an advanced country. But if you dig into the statistics, you’ll find that 30k gun deaths are concentrated in suicides and inner city homicides.
Bottom line: you’re still pretty safe in the USA. Not perfectly. But there’s a reason people flock here as a desired haven.
I agree that there are Happy Haitians and North Koreans. It is relative. They do tend to be fewer mind you. You having such a large underclass probably tends to sque your numbers down. Our social safety net catches a lot more people than yours. I go to the US a couple of times a year and I am always astounded how in your face your poverty is compared to Canada. Which is not to say we don’t have any third world conditions, just visit a rural reservation. But it isn’t like yours. I think that that explains a lot of it.
Believe me, I’ve been to the worst USA neighborhoods. Nobody is 3rd world impoverished. Social welfare programs mitigate the worst when some body knows how to apply for and use the system. Reservations are another topic, as they’re sovereign actually and have well know social problems…with the greater USA as an exit if need be for these folks.
The acute problem is with the hard core homeless. Like here in San Francisco. We actually have much less homeless than in the 90s. Those who could be saved have been, leaving the hard core homeless: mental, substance, and social issues.
By the way, when I visit Canada, mostly Toronto, people seem very happy. I have cousins living in Canada. Pretty good overall social contract, opportunities, and standard of living.
I’ll however repeat what I said about certain European high tax and spend societies: it’s easier at such smaller scale and when somebody else takes up the lion’s share of arsenal of democracy. Remember, we’re 340M people, 15% foreign born. The USA spends 15% of the federal budget on defense. Which keeps supply chains open all over the world to raise global GDP.
People keep coming here for good reason.
Yes I can imagine Canada is very happy even though I haven’t visited.
I love visiting Canada. Again, gotta say they were pretty content. Even the woke were happy…and cool.
๐
You live in the USA I think you said?
Yes.
Zeno or J.S. Mill could be good places to start in finding this ‘better life’ and how to live it
Zeno or J.S. Mill could be good places to start in finding this ‘better life’ and how to live it
Please explain.
The idea of the importance of knowledge and those who come to that wisdom living in harmony, through the ideas of Zeno. Now as for utilitarianism it has a great place in trying to think about the extent of political wisdom, or at least, in my view, how far we should see it as a means of logical thought and understanding it is not a total panacea for the travails of life . In my case I have these views through trying to read such matters and not through expert philosophy like you. I am a student of English Literature
Miss Cysgod, thanks for the nice words.
Though I can’t say I’m impressed by utilitarianism, I’m impressed with anybody who knows what it is, especially without a midterm hanging over their head like a Sword of Damocles.
Do you like Mill’s father too, who was also a utilitarian? How about Bentham?
I take it by Zeno you mean Zeno of Citium rather than Zeno of Elea? It’s a shame we only have scraps of their work.
My main subject was English Literature, and a PhD is Metaphysical Lyrics and Poems of the 17th century (Donne, Butler et al). and also read history in the first year, and then read widely (not always understanding) in other matters such as philosophy.
There is a problem when reading Mill in his own words. He has such a High Victorian style that I cannot get the image of W E Gladstone out of my mind pontificating to Disraeli. I much enjoyed his thesis on the Penal System. Bentham I have read in relationship to his examination of the nature of thought, language, law and government.
If I had been listening to Zeno by the painted porch, the colonnade (Stoa), I would not have been in the front but at the back scribbling notes. However, on the way home I would have got sidetracked by a pretty face and written love poems for them. However, when showing them to someone they would have suggested I go seek Sappho in Lesbos, if you get my meaning .of my inclinations lol
Good to talk
Good morning,
It is based on the the World Happiness Report that was released by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the United Nations on March 20, the date that the United Nations has declared to be the International Day of Happiness. The report ranks countries based on six key variables that support well-being: income, freedom, trust to the government, healthy life expectancy, social support and generosity.
The United States made rank 19th, at no 10th place ranking for income, the US doesn’t rank in the top 10 on measures that make up a happy country in the UN report. They include 12th place for generosity, 37th place for social support, 61st place for freedom and 42nd place for corruption. Surprising.
1st. in believing in Guardian angels and 1st in incarceration, 1st in gun murders…..
Gun control and not gun murders.
Canada has 10% of your population and fewer than 300 gun murders a year. I don’t care how you parse the stats. You have a slightly better than double chance of being shot in Canada as you do being hit by lightening…
I don’t have a lot of wealth and am a very happy person. I agree, lists like this are always opinion. One man’s utopia is another man’s hell.
Well in the USA i am a wage slave to the rich and not able to reasonably afford land to build a small home for my kids and homestead and grow gardens and build things on land as would make me happy like most human beings in the long human history. The point is capitalism is intentional imposed poverty for the common people through Enclosure and thus removes our economic freedom and makes us wage slaves which is opposite to happiness. This is an objective material reality about whether we have reasonable security of life and enough free time to actually live and not just be a wage slave. And they meant it to be this way. It’s no accident. It’s evil: https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/fc653ad78728b329699dfcce68e2293b58897b5a0d6bf5463a72b059ecfcbe6a.png
We have to end this system of extraction of our labor which means the theft of our lives.
Murn, my apologies for this political post. I wrote it without looking where I was posting.
Hey man who even brought up communism? I’m right about what is wrong, though.
I didn’t say anything in the prescriptive direction did i? Sounds like you saw a ghost.
What do you mean?
Oh Canada!!!!!
Mozambique here!!!!
The happiest place to live is a state of mind called contentment and love. And from this residence you can sally forth and bring that love to not just those around you, but humanity across the world
Miss Cysgod, I take it you’re more Platonist than Aristotelian ; )
lol I see what you mean, but all that shadows in caves business is not for me. Think in truth I am more a stoic in the original sense of that philosophy
I wouldn’t wanna be an Aristraliun neither
I will never ever find that place
I think we all struggle to locate that serene place of love
?? made to struggle? I guess we are ๐ and the world has a way of guiding us away from those ideals
