I have always enjoyed making things. I can remember raiding the construction site next to my house for all the little scrap pieces of wood and going home and nailing them all together with a hammer. I had seen the construction workers doing it and it looked fun.
When I got into the 6th grade I started taking Shop class. It was mostly woodworking with some metal working and plastic technology stuff. The shop classes were considered easy classes by most and I guess they were for most. They were easy for me, but only because I loved making things. I never wanted to waste that two hours and I was always messing with stuff … and trying to make anything I could. My teacher liked and despised me for the same reason … I kept him busy more than the other all the other kids put together. In high school I took Carpentry class for 4 years and I learned much more and became the teachers pet. You have to understand that the dream carpentry student often got kicked out for various frowned upon activities … Like leaving campus whenever … smoking on campus … skipping class …. throwing a frog leg on the security guards golf cart…. holding my girlfriends ass while standing in the hall …. and various other things 🙂
But the shop teacher loved me and I would always help him clean up stuff …. but he was a good guy so he would always help me with whatever. He was a little Japanese guy from Hawaii and he would tell me about growing up on the islands. He was a great teacher, I am sure he has retired by now.
I tried to go to college, but I could not pass the math class. I have always had trouble with math that I could not visualize. Anything past algebra does not compute. I understand formulas … but forget it .. give me an F 🙂
After college I got a job installing cabinets. These were crap factory cabinets, but it was a start. Then I got a job in a real custom cabinet shop. This was where I needed to be the entire time. I love cabinet shops !!!
So for most of the last 20 years … Its been mostly cabinet shops for me. The feeling you get when you complete something is great. Its almost like a drug, well for me anyways.
I like running different machines and the mechanics of each one are still neat, no matter how many thousands of times I have done it. Its hard to get bored in a cabinet shop. You have to be adept at many things, and its quite a physical job and fortunately I think I will be able to continue for quite some time.
I am working on a set of black walnut cabinets for a big fancy schmancy house. Here is the thing … when this big fancy schmancy house is done, it will be the labor of many different people in many trades. When people walk in the house … they will oooh and ahhhh my cabinets like they do nothing else in the house … I have seen it too many times …. and that is a great feeling.
Its a shame how the technical classes are getting phased out of schools now. None of these kids has ever ran a saw or cut a board or worked on a car … I learned more in the technical classes than anywhere else … but I am weird … 🙂
What do you think ?
I love my work. It’s so much fun. Hey Murn! How’s it going.
I’ve worked for the same company for 20 years. Got the job when I was 20 through sheer nepotism.
I work with lasers and super computers.
I work 4am to 12pm. I get paid extra for these hours but I secretly love them.
I work less than two miles from my home.
Sometimes I can take naps at work, or smoke reefers, or watch movies. I have a Keurig brewer and snacks.
I really stepped in it.
All those sound great.
You must have mastered your work very well.
I’ve been in the same business for 26 years, since I graduated from uni until now.
Will retire when I want to maybe in about 15-17 years…:))
Yeah I like my job. Public library worker. Most of my coworkers are friends of mine and the hours are great. Plus it makes me feel like my long years in college weren’t a total waste. I still see it as a stepping stone towards a writing career though.
@Cúthail Zomb I came across your hostile comment to me about Jews.
I just have this to say you don’t know nothing
Where do you stand on the Sham Talmud view of the Noahide laws?
I suggest you try and develop a closer relationship with YHWH ELOHIM
and quit being so hostile to folks you disagree with.
I don’t recall the conversation that you’re referring to. Remind me. I’ve never harbored any ill will towards Jews or any ethnicity. I imagine this is a misunderstanding or a case of mistaken identity.
No you just came down on me because I was critical of the Rothschild Banksters Industrial war machine. It is like you think the Rothschild Banksters are champions of the Jews. My work is for Yahshua Love and light .
This is about Truth and being the salt of the earth.
Judge not lest you be judged .
Peace and Shalom
Well l wouldn’t go so far as to say “l love it” (lifeguard) but l certainly don’t mind going to work each day!
Props to you for your work. I guess it is probably very difficult when you’re faced with an emergency? 🙁
Well l’m still training but once a week we have a different rescue scenario.
The fact you want to do such a job deserves props,in training or otherwise.
I live in a beachy area of Australia and, a big supporter of the Life Savers here.
You guys and gals do amazing work. 😀
My folks prepared me well for math.
I own my own small business. I like the fact that I get to do what I do (actually, what I backed into doing). But just the same, I’d rather be rich and retired.
Pretty much hated every job I ever had despite the fact that most would kill to have them. Just dont like having to be somewhere on someone else’s schedual.
Irrational
Hang in there
I wish i knew how to make plates. I would enjoy doing something like that.
Work “when you prefer to do something else”…do Actors, sports stars…”work” for less or even “jack” if they had to….sure would, think about it..
I got tired of hearing actors speak of “giving” their work during charity tv sessions…GIVE EM you MONEY…! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/de84517803df191f22dc3720096dab7213db8e5f287d0c199edc14d920f1f151.jpg

I mostly love my job as a software engineer and certainly am grateful for it. The good: great pay & benefits; is objectively measured, reducing politics; work with talented people in tight teams; doesn’t break the body and occurs in a nice, safe climate controlled environment; flexible working hours; lots of travel to interesting places; and free meals and snacks. It doesn’t hurt that even high IQ people often don’t like this work, leaving more opportunity.
No job is without bad aspects or interludes of trouble. There are always some politics and jerks. Especially those who attempt to take credit and have to be dealt with. An occasional smart but authoritarian and rude person you have to tolerate. Hey, some can get away with it, to a degree.
I like coding. I feel like I’m in zone, one with the code sometimes. Just me, compilers, debuggers, and screens. Crafting code line by line, to algorithmic, performance, and scalability standard.
I have some patents and lots of source code out there with my name on it. Hey, no big deal. But it does give me a sense of purpose and pride. Most importantly, it gives me the pay, benefits, and lifestyle to do right by my wife and kids.
I’m grateful to my employers. A job is privilege and not a right as I say. With a good one, I can make decisions to be independent as possible. So I can and do endure a lot for a job…always looking to prove my worth…not fighting silly battles of pride and taking offense.
BTW: if there is a job suitable for social media like this, it’s mine. I can easily be productive and post.
Recommended.
I am sorry that where you live, trades are being phased out at schools. In Australia,”industrial sciences” ( tosser name it’s now called) is still firmly ingrained.
There is a need for people out there like you Stan who truly LOVE what they do. Not everyone wants a cabinet made out of plywood.
Do you have your own business??
I did for a while, but it failed.
I work for someone else again .
Don’t call it a fail. Call it a learning curve. We never fail when it’s within us,Stan. Sometimes you have to hit some kinks to do it right the next time.
I know that from experience.
May I ask what hiccups you believe were part of you not succeeding the first time?
I did not have any customers or contractors when I started.
I could never find enough work. I only stayed open about a year. I suck at sales and I did not do the footwork to make contacts.
I kept all my equipment and its all stored. I do plan on doing it again. But next time … I will have customers lined up.
If need be from a marketing perspective, I would be happy to help you gratis, Stan. This wench here could also sell ice to eskimo’s. You need help in that way..seriously,let me know.
What about custom, made to order on Amazon ? BTW , do you do wardrobe Armoires ?
I do whatever is made of wood
I love what I do. I am self employed, but as I don’t garner a wage or salary from my NFP, I also love the “side” work I do,which is voice over work. You know the voices in the background you hear in commercials, or perhaps even voices in animation, or even the person you hear on automated “menu” style calls if you’re calling a phone or cable supplier? Could well be me you are hearing. lol
Thank you for reading. 😉
How nice for you !!
Hi Lilymason2. Which part? If it is the voice work,it’s fun when you get a little script telling saying you have to sound like a little kid or next, a grandma style voice or even a Southern Belle accent. It changes things up a bit. 🙂

Remodeling houses has definitely kept the boredom away all these years. Always something different. I have experience in nearly every phase of home construction. It’s been fun.
I have done a few different things/ helped out other guys etc …
About the only thing I am not wanting to mess with is Electricity.
I hire that guy 🙂
Electricity has been one of my favorites, even as a kid. Of course it’s best to leave it alone if you’re uncomfortable playing with it. Better safe than sorry. And also make sure it meets local and national codes if you do it. There’s no excuse for shoddy work.
If you’re asking me if I derive pleasure from doing things for other people, then the answer is most definitely yes.
I need a new cabinet build in a room we are renovating right now.
If you find yourself in Australia, ask for JAF, I might have a job for you. 😀
I seek for next year’s summer a relaxing job as a bar tender in one of your lovely mountain inns.
Do you have any connection to innkeepers from the Tiroler region?
Something like this please
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/9240786532cf24aa976f11dba2431b04cbda4cc59ab918c26ee5a033dad95a5c.jpg
Surprisingly, I don’t have any good connections in Austria. LOL
Hm. Strange. Did I misread your post maybe?
Nope! Verbatim quote.
No words… But next time I take a trip to New Zealand I will be sure to put you on my itinerary for a nice visit. Maybe we can go watch a Rugby game.
You have the best words! When do you plan your Next trip to NZ? We should adjust our schedules.
When the opportunity arises, you will be the first to know.
begins to chant manically
ARISE!
ARISE!
HEAR MY COMMAND AND HEED MY CALL!
ARISE!
ARISE!
mighty KRAKEN, bane of the seven seas. ARISE!
Ohhh, nooo. I meant to summon the “opportunity” not this Kraken guy. But I mixed up the incantations. Well, I have to go to work now. You please take care of that Kraken. He looks angry.
P.S.:
If you see Rakkel please double check that she is not cheating on her training excercises. You see, she always uses these multi syllable smarty-pants words no one really understands. Incre-something. Just make sure that she completes her weekly push-ups on your knuckles programm, that would be lovely! On her knuckles. Logically. Not on yours.
But that’s a great idea to improve the training. Two students do push up on each others’ knuckels. That’s something I can get my head behind.
GOTTA GO!!! Need to capture this awesome idea while it lasts and trap it in a jar.
switches on smoke machine, disappears in a
thinmysterious smoke screen, coughing badly from all that smokeRakkel is not too sure what this game is about… LOL
If only I was there 🙂
HEY Jaf!!! 🙂
We’re renovating too…lol Bathrooms and kitchen. We are NOT going with “Kaboodle”. lol
Good stuff! We are doing a wet room and a games room come guest bedroom.
It’s a wonderful feeling to have brand new things in our home.
I have just renovated my bathroom and closet too and change the tiles & the build in cabinetry into all white. I feel like being a Snow white every time I enter that room and wanted to stay longer there…=D
I will be happy to be using these rooms for a new purpose, although I do expect that every time I enter my two new rooms it will be to clean as it is a space for my boys and the entertaining they do with their friends. 😀
Happy for your boys then, they must be very exciting to have their new rooms to play.
Yes, I loved my work. Now that I am semi-retired I do different stuff, and I choose to take roles that I might enjoy.
I would love to have had such skills. Most of us spend our lives punching buttons or filling in forms.
My job may keep me working late and may have me travelling a lot yet I love it not just for decent pay and benefits but also NO DRAMA ALLOWED at the workplace more than anything.
Only because it pays well. 15 months till retirement. Not that I am counting.
15 months isn’t a long way to go. I hope you will enjoy for being a retiree.
hmm….I was a Offset Lithographer….Printer for short….worked with type setting up to 6 color offset…today commercial printing is a dying trade, after literally hundreds of yrs….worked as an Aircraft Mech too….courtesy of the USAF…but today you need a degree to pursue that line of employment…A&P License …I’m on the down swing for my time on this planet, so keep myself entertained with a PT maintenance position…and some projects….
I love my job. Saved my life. Taken me to every corner of this country.
Your job sounds adventurous.
Good luck and be safe.
So long as we aren’t talking about the following, it’s not all bad…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRcRn_Xv7Ek
I’ve been in sales and a business owner and self employed all of my adult life. For some reason I would LOVE to make doors. Don’t know why. Mostly beautiful wooden front doors.
With a one car garage and a few thousand dollars invested in the correct tools, you could easily do it.
Why don’t you then?
Do!
no i don’t love my job, mostly because of who i work with. but if you are in america and in the trades, i can get you [or some of your buddies] a good deal on engineered hardwood floors or LVP.
Hey, if you like, you can make a ‘Free Ads Sales Topic’ for that as this site goes publicly on google..:))
maybe once i incorperate and pivot from operations to sales. thanks.
Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. That’s a mark of maturity and responsibility. But hopefully over time you can have a more ideal situation…which is something to aspire for.
I’m not in love with my job but it’s not a bad way to make a living.
As with anything else there are goods days and bad/
Wise words from a matured man.
It’s true that there is never be a perfection, it’s always good and bad in almost everything including jobs, it’s how we respond to both.
I cannot honestly say I loved my career. Good on those who can.
For most people it’s just a case of doing an ordinary job and not one which they genuinely love.
True. I once read 80% of Americans hate their job. LOL! I just did what I was supposed to in order to take care of myself. It was not anything special.
I always advise young people to balance necessity and love. You need a job that will afford a decent living. Pick one and do it well, ideally one you can love to a suitable degree.
But you should not forgo some good opportunities just because it’s not an idyllic love. You have to tough some things out. By all means, don’t do something if it is truly revolting to you.
Heck, we could be talking about relationships too!
😂
Lol Imperator good advice 🙂
It’s okay, Bro.
You sound happy with what you do and that is more important than going to work routine only because of obligation but don’t feel happy and not enjoying it.
My body protested to the point I no longer work. LOL!

That makes you sound like you are a good cook. Isn’t that great?
It’s ok, I am in the commucation world. Always changing, currently the only change I want is more time to enjoy the rv and to work on my 34.
Communication world, that sounds great though.
Sorry, what is RV?

Looks great.
Congrats and enjoy…:))
It’s actually rather boring most of the time, but it pays the bills. 🤑
Or maybe get the side jobs, take a part time job apart from that boring one? =D
Thank you Murn.
Most welcome, Stan.
“The feeling you get when you complete something is great.”
I love to conclude things which I dedicated myself completely.
This really fills us with a sense of helpful participation, among other rewards.
Then, starting other projects that will give us the pleasure of receiving the reward by completing is really a trigger and a call to action.
