Since now we are owning a website and on social media mainly on this Disqus website that goes Openly to public, it is important to know how to stay safe and to protect ourselves from possible “Hacking, Doxxing, Swatting” and other cybercriminals.
We are focusing on Doxxing in this case.
Doxxing is a cyber attack that involves discovering the real identity of an Internet user. The term “doxxing” comes from the expression “dropping dox”, which was a revenge tactic used by hackers where they dropped malicious information on a rival. The attacker then reveals that person’s details so others can target them with malicious attacks. Doxxing is also used to shame or punish people who would rather stay anonymous, because of their controversial beliefs or other types of non-mainstream activity.
Doxxing can ruin our life, here are some points how we can avoid it:
– Protect your IP address with a VPN/Proxy
VPN is short for Virtual Private Network, and acts as a filter for Internet traffic. Basically, the traffic from your PC or other device goes into the VPN and acquires its identifying properties, meaning its IP address, location, and any other similar data. It even encrypts your data and makes it so that even your ISP isn’t able to figure out your IP address.
– Don’t use the Login with Facebook/Google buttons
This makes you will automatically give the website information attached your Facebook/Google account, such as current city, job, phone number, your native language, family info and more.
– Use strong passwords for your sensitive accounts (email, financial, social media, etc.), and don’t use the same password for more than one online account!
– Keep your Windows operating system and your vulnerable applications up to date.
Software updates deliver both: new features and fix security issues. And the second part is even more important than the first. If you use popular software, like Java, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Adobe Flash, Adobe Shockwave, Quicktime or popular browsers like Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer, always make sure you have the latest version available installed.
– Go online with a secure browser
Your browser is the main tool you use to access the Internet. Thus, you should pay a great deal of attention to securing it correctly. One recommendation is to only secure websites for sensitive financial operations. To visit a secure website, make sure the web address starts with “https://”. The “s” comes from “secure sockets layer”and it indicates you are connected to a website where data, which is sent and received, is encrypted.
– Don’t trust public and free Wi-fi networks
Be careful when connecting to public and free wireless networks.
A favourite method used by online criminals to retrieve your private information is to use wireless network sniffers to access data sent over unprotected networks.
– Don’t use your personal email to register on forums or other similar websites.
– Hide your personal data from a website’s WHOIS.
Owning a blog or website requires that you register the Internet domain with some personal information. This information is then stored in a database called WHOIS.
– Don’t forget to log out
Don’t simply close your browser when you are done with your financial operation or when you exit your online account. You need to remember to log out from your online account. If you don’t do this, especially if you are in a public location, the next person who opens Facebook in the browser will access directly your Facebook profile.
– Know your rights, and use the law whenever possible
Local law enforcement (Police or Sherif Department), IC3 (Internet Crime Complaint Center). Complaint can be filled here: https://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx. And your local victim service provider.

FYI 2/10:
If you paid for or use a free VPN, read the fine print (again) things changed this morning.
Get Malwarebyte, the free one works: https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/9db484dcc751dee29ff582f39a5fda62659c8bc734f89c35bc74447d8e192e60.png
Be Safe.
Hey Ibis,
Morning..:))
Sorry I just looked at it closer now and it’s quite useful information.
I just heard that name now.
So far I have only been using Norton. So far has been good. Have no issue about having virus. It doesn’t only guard PC from virus, it also has a big cloud storage, securing VPN and Life Lock Identity Theft protection. It’s been effective so far.

Actually the type I am using is the 360…:)
Hi Murn.
Hi J.
Morning…:))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyvLNtG7QA8
Here’s a good topic for a thread. How can Channel owners be stopped from throwing tantrum bans and colluding behind the scenes to ban certain commenters? Those types of bands are a direct violation of terms of service and a form of harassment. To discuss doing so with others that are of the same frame of mind is a conspiracy to conduct harassment. That also is a violation of terms of service. For these people to hide behind false pretenses and put their stuff off as genuine is about as fake as it can get.
I had to run a little test to narrow a few things down
Banning for no reason without the commenters violating the site rules is indeed unfair.
Is that the case with the recommended topic?
Yes. I been chatting with a few other folks on different sites that have had this problem, or sites that are removing posts they claim are off topic. I’ve not run across any sites like that, but on occasion do go off the page about different subjects. I have tho, experienced bad moderators. Especially not nice are the ones that plan on banning someone without them crossing the line
Morning..:)
I am sorry I just saw this.
Off topic is acceptable here but not too off topic..:)
HI MNC
Hi Purp,
Did you talk to Cysgod?
testing 123 hello?
Hello there,
Good morning…:))
Good morning Murn 🙂 I needed to run a little test
Good morning,
Why would you need to run a test?
Your account is just fine and your comments didn’t stuck on pending.
On this site and a couple others I follow, I hadn’t seen anything new for a few days. Willamette Week will go for days and days without any new topics. Isaw that happen when disqus was on the blink before and had to check if i could post
Yes, we are mostly busy at work on weekdays. I sometimes post a topic on weekdays when I am not too busy, but I definitely post on the weekend or on Friday (I just posted a simple thread for Friday). Our other Mods aren’t that active as they are also busy with their rl.
What site/blog is that Willamette Week?
It’s a publication here in my home state that uses disqus. They have a few good articles and a few bad ones, lol. https://www.wweek.com/homepage/
That’s good to be on the site that reside close to you.
You must feel safe as if they do something wrong to, you can go there to say something to them. I have not been to many sites here, due to my limit time for being here. But I do have a few blogs that I visit regularly, it’s only because I know the people there.
Willamette Week has some pretty good stories sometimes, and articles of local interest. It’s pretty cool. You don’t have to join anything to read them or comment if you like 🙂
I like that kind of site or blog that don’t require visitors to sign up with an email address or other ID. I made this site as easy and simple as possible for the audience to come in and use it without asking them to leave an email address etc….:)
If you do not have a VPN, you can ask a not close friend or a colleague to let you use their email address to get a new email address. You can then use your new email address to get another second email address, perhaps even with a different provider. You can then use the first email or the second email address to get a Disqus account that is only very loosely linked to your other electronic accounts. This will not prevent the determined skillful person from hacking onto your account and doing what a brilliant evil genius can do but as putting locks on one’s doors will do might persuade a person to simply harass or rob some one else out of lack of diligence on the problem maker’s part.
Hi Tai,
That sounds a bit a long way but it seems help.
The control over your own data is a human right.
If not yet in your jurisdiction, you should take that into consideration when you seek to make informed choices regarding national politics.
We know it since 1983. Time for you to catch up world.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Informational_self-determination
im open about information with me i often post photos of myself or of my house & vehicles on disqus thats just me but if youve had a bad experience and wish to stay anonymos online you can mask your ip address by using the onion router (tor) its a little complex to use but its doable what it does is spoof your ip address to make you at a location 1000s of miles away even spoofs an ip address from texas to Eastern Europe!
i used TOR one time when i had a stalker from Ireland online they wouldnt shoo and they knew too much about me haha it was too late i mean i ticked him off first like on skype i changed my last name to his last name since i kept telling him we were married . one day it suprised me / shocked me he sent me a photo out of the blue i was like *WHAT THE F*** “! it was a photo from google map of a house /location of a few minutes away from my house
thats what made me frightened i stoped using skype awhile and i used tor even when it was too late knowing my house location and such https://kajabi-storefronts-production.global.ssl.fastly.net/kajabi-storefronts-production/blogs/3184/images/cmswwn4LQqqliY2bvD6O_01.jpg
That sounds scary, Katie.
It’s good that nothing happened to you.
I haven’t tried TOR. I am fine with VPN.
cool i should look into that VPN right now mi not worried about doxxing its mainly accounnt /computer security since im still using windows 7 and it lost support for it around 1 month ago
i should try to see the system requiements to upgrade to windows 8 or windows 10
Use window 10, window 8 is a bit outdated..

the main thing to avoid doxxing is just to be cool with other people online/ on disqus here i mean you dont have to bow down to them just be cool dont say anything offensive to someone needlessly , since if you P|SS someone off some wont just walk away they want to get even with you haha they cant reach across the screen and punch you in the face so they might doxx you .
im always cool & respectfull with people i often say ” sir or ma’am ” to people online or on disqus even when i dont expect for people to call me ma’am or Miss
True, avoid drama and fight and we’ll be fine.
ya thats what itts all about theres a very very good chanse you will NOT be bothered / harrased or doxxed if you treat others ok online
Virtual private networks are good, too; I recommend Nord VPN. 😎
I recommend Opera with its built-in VPN and supplement it with Ghostery and Privacy Badger, all of which are free online. I also use multiple browsers as needed, setting their privacy settings so high that even the browsers have no idea where I live. (Oh, that’s Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, BTW!)
That sounds great.
I used Nord-VPN before but a friend recommended Express-VPN, so I just changed it to this. It’s secure and fast with no log, 24/7 customer support via email or live chat, unlimited P2P/Torenting, connect to over 90+ countries. unblock censored & geo-restricted content. I feel safe and secured..:))
That sounds great also!
Thanks,
Yes, I feel confidence with this newest version.
That sounds good, Kid. Although I use the different one.
Stay safe on the internet by being fairly anonymous and don’t write what you will regret. Forget base criminals. It’s social media lynch mobs that attack, insult, and defame if they get your real identity.
Rather tame things can be grounds for dismissal if shown to your employers. Especially if it violates somebody’s sense of partisan and identity politics. It’s gotten pretty nasty in the USA.
I’m more open here than on Facebook. At least here we have some anonymity. And strive to be civil. Ironically in open forums it’s become fashionable to be insulting.
Says a lot about human nature. People insult both with some anonymity or openly if backed by mobs.
The truly
paranoidsafety conscious use the Onion Router.A very useful thread… i use Vpn.
I do too and make a unique password that no one would guess.
I tried using a unique password that no one could guess…guess who couldn’t remember it? ME! Forgot where I wrote it down. Had to uninstall it and start all over…lol
LOL….poor you for having it uninstall and start all over again, that’s tough
I would always wrote it down on my note right away and not putting it on a paper as I would forget too….=D
I did write it down but couldn’t find the paper I wrote it on when I needed it…lol
LOL… I hope the last one is saved now…=D
So do I but I was still hacked!
How will I know if I get hacked ?
When I got hacked they froze my computer and start stealing things out of it. I guess there’s many ways. Depends on what they want. These guys wanted money to unfreeze it, at the time, I had IT guys (former hackers) that got it unfroze and held their computer hostage.
That’s dangerous and I think it’s time for me to be more careful.
I had a business then and they were trying to find something specific…
its also very important to NOT use a very very unique nickname here if you used the same nickname on other webpages
Hi Angel.
hi sweetie good morning ! i hope you had a nice weekend mine was rather nice
Great …feel good to c u again.
Hi Katie,
I use the same name for here and YouTube account with protection and privacy settings.
Well, I realize doxxing can be a major problem, but I ran areas for CompuServe and AOL for 35 years under my real name. And my number’s never been unlisted. The one time same jackass tried to frighten me with a bogus phone call, I reported him to the police, who contacted him once they traced the line. So I don’t fret over it much.
That is great that the police could trace them fast and I believe they wouldn’t bother you again after that. I do use my real name on LinkedIn and Facebook as 98% friends there are the people I know in real life, I have never had any issues like many people had. But I set the privacy a bit tight and I don’t accept friend request unless I know the person.
The problem with Disqus is that doxxing became a game of tit for tat so there were people who saw it as a challenge to one up each other.
An arms race, of sorts.
There is far too much of that, that continues to happen. I THOUGHT new platforms and a new decade starting let alone year, people would wipe their slates clean.
My thoughts were dashed. People just keep on doing it. *shaking head*
The reason I never hid anything was because I quickly recognized the futility of doing so. It is sad that people choose to behave this way. While I never doxxed anyone myself I did occasionally engage in childish behavior I have apologized for and made an effort not to engage in childish behavior unless it was being facetious w/o any intent to harm.
This is exactly it.
Use those points to protect ourselves from being revealed by the haters to doxx us.
I had deleted all and anything disqus. At the time, my local news still used disqus, and if I wanted to comment, I had to log in with disqus facebook or google. I don’t have facebook, and had deleted disqus, so I logged in with google, thinking it would show as “guest” or something. Nope…it created this profile. I tried to delete it, and it asks me for a password. I’ve typed in every password I’ve ever used, and none of them register, not even my email passwords. I can’t add an avatar or change anything.
That sounds weird.
If that the case, delete your google account will seem to delete your Disqus account if you’ll like to make a new Disqus account that you can do something to it like change things including putting pic in the avatar.
Recommended.
I didn’t know at all what “doxxing” was until I was accused of supposedly doing it. *shrug*
As such, it’s clearly something others do.
It’s clearly something the people who spend their whole 24/7 hours online do.
How are You ?
I am good, Purp.
Thank you.
What about you?
How are your blogs going?
I hope you have active Mods who actively post topic and moderate.
Personally, I like the concept of a virtual private network very much but have been told it would slow my connection. I’m uncertain by how much, though.
Does anyone know about this aspect of VPN?
I use a VNP when planning for trips and vacations as when you do, you sometimes get better deals on airfares and such. Also use it AFTER booking for vacations as then I can see what the supermarkets have on sale and stuff to be able to pre-plan for meals and such. ( We usually stay in apartments, houses or villas over hotel rooms).
Genius!!
Or am I just cheap? lol
I have saved thousands of dollars doing it this way though.
Seriously, it’s a grand idea
Well, the last trip we took ( which was from Brisbane Australia – Round trip) to LA and also a side trip to Vegas. for my husband and I, flying Business Class for the long haul flights and First class for intra US flights, accommodations being at the Hilton and MGM Grand ( suites in both over rooms), car hire, which included a Mustang convertible, limo transfers in vegas, all our food and alcohol, the entire 2 week trip ( we were there from 31st Dec – 14th January 2020), was 11000. AUD ( so 7400 USD) That also includes a binge shop we did at Macy’s as they had an 85% sale on stuff. lol
If I had done the same through a travel agent IN AUSTRALIA, it would have been near triple.
I was thinking of opening my own online travel agency quite frankly. lol
3500 dollars is a lot of money still on the table….that sounds pretty lucrative actually
As we live in Australia, it costs a lot to get anywhere really. lol
To do it our way, I actually saved us 19000 AU.
That said, I helped a friend who lives in St Paul who wanted to get to France and also was able to save them 2000 USD on their whole trip AND was able to get them Business Class seats over the Economy ( coach) seats they were looking at. They are also staying in a gorgeous little apartment while there too close to The Louvre. ( they are artsy so that was key to their trip)
Did they bring you any wine?
No. lol He’s taking his trek around Easter and as I consider him a son anyway, I don’t expect anyway. As long as they have a good time is all that matters 🙂
KIZMET is awesome!!!
I know 🙂
I use NORD VPN and it doesn’t slow my speeds down at all.
Thanks, Kizmet. It’s not free, is it?
Edit: Never mind. I already checked. Not free, but reasonably priced. I’ll keep it in mind. Thanks!
no it’s not free but it’s only 2.95 AU per month. (so 1.98 USD) per month
Super cheap. Really great!
3 times cheaper and then some than a FAKE pie lol
LOLOL!!
I have to get that. I have never used a VPN and I wish I would have. I didn’t know it was that inexpensive.
I get cheaper airfares and stuff with one. lol Saving a couple of grand is worth the 3 bucks a month for me. 🙂
How are you lovely? 🙂 Doing ok?
NORD isgood, so is Proton. I use Proton VPN as well as email, and it’s fully encrypted at both ends no back door including anti-screenshot
Very nice. Thanks for the tip!
By chance, do you use the basic, free service, or do you pay for more speed?
I use the basic one and it’s still pretty good. You just don’t have as many countries to go play in. One thing I hate about it, is I forget I’m on it, and will look at my local news, and see the weather….for Iceland, lol or I’ll get ads in Japanese. The South Africa one really throws me off
LOLOL!!!!
IDK if I’d want that. It may drive me a wee bit barmy. However, it may be worth the added privacy.
Has it slowed down your Internet significantly?
Japan i could see no difference. European traffic slows down those connections. There all kinds of different ones in the states that run ok, down south mostly. New England and the middle right coast will slow down, depending on what time it is
Thanks so much for the thorough review. I may give it a whirl.
Hi NM… GM, Have a great day.
You as well, Purple! I’m going back to sleep. Haha!
Partied too hard on Stupor Bowl Sunday!
Nord is good.
But ExpressVPN is better…:))
Never heard of it before now. That said, had Nord for 12+ odd months now and ain’t going to change to something else. Nord is not broken, ya know and it’s reliable for the purposes I use it. 🙂
Nord is good enough already, many people use it.
ExpressVPN is just the newest version, people call it the ‘premium’ one.
Most of VPN would usually slow down the connection, not with this ExpressVPN.
I use VPNs for work and it has no real performance impact.
ExpressVPN is good, fast and secure.
I used Nord before but just changed it to Express.
Excellent topic!
Thanks Bro,
Just to share what I read and learn.
I hope it’s useful.
Today is a rare Palindrome date of 02.02.2020
Read it backward and forward, we get the same.
How lucky we are to see this day.
The last Palindrome date was about 900 years ago at 11.11.1111
Good night.
Interesting..
I wish I would have read this article before I got doxxed.
Happy 02/02/2020 day.
Given the way you gave out information publicly about your true identity, nothing in this article would have prevented you from being doxed.
***
The easiest way to find you would have simply to have paid attention to JOS who made no secret about his IRL identity. Once anything connected to JOS had a record of your address, anyone who looked up public info on JOS would have also found you.
***
You also gave away a LOT of personal information about yourself just in casual conversation.
Hi Shep,
That’s true. Hackers search online to get our true IDs, when the IDs are published, they won’t need to work hard to do what they want to.
Hi Murn, Shep is trying to pick a fight with me here and I told him to stop it. I don’t want any fighting at your blog. Sorry.
Hi eri,
That’s going to be the first and the last comment triggering a fight ever allowed on here. I let it stays only because it has a point that reminds us about being careful not to share our personal identity on open forum on the internet.
I am tagging Shep to let him know about this.
@Providing_Care:disqus
Thanks Murn.
You are very welcome…:))
That’s not true. The casual conversations on Disqus isn’t what doxed me. You knew my real identity years ago and then your friends doxed me.
Don’t pick a fight with me here because Murn doesn’t want drama at her blog.
—-
I am sorry that happened to you, Eri,
If you changed home address, please keep it offline along with your other IDs.
I know….
I’ll come back soon.

By never getting on the Internet or using a Cell phone?
Once you login to Disqus account or to Google, you are on the internet.
It doesn’t matter what tool you use.
Morning Murn.
Hey Purp,
Good to see you.
I’ve clicked your new blog and it looked great.
You are very handy, Purp.
But again to enable me join, I was asked for an email address.
Very useful information, thanks for sharing.
My pleasure, Roach.
The next rare palindrome day will be 12:12:2121. Thank you for the info. My partner and I were wondering about that. And we will be certainly long gone by then..
We’ll be gone from the earth by then and turn to dusts…:))
The date I remember as kid was 1961, and how the TV and radio the announcers were making a big deal about how it could be flipped and it would read the same and that the next one wouldn’t happen until 6009.
I never realized that, and I was born in 1961.
Wow…..6009 is still a long way to go…..4009 years generations, we’ll be dusts by then…:)
I think I’ll hold off making any party plans for that one 😉
No party, not even a glass of wine…:)
Well, maybe a bit of hillbilly wine to keep me going until it gets here 🙂

That can be for the whole people on this site…=D
I’ll make sure there’s enough ‘preserving fluid’ for everyone 🙂

What is that?
Sure that look a lot…:)
