Going to prison is usually a horrible experience, fraught with danger and situations which will add time to your sentence.Β In the United States, they say the system will break even the toughest inmates.
If you or anyone else you know has been incarcerated, what was that all about and what sort of survival tips for inmates have you learned?
My mom went to prison when I was 15, she died there and that’s how I have my sister, but the one thing I remember was that she was annoyingly always looking to the bright side of things, and she would only tell me and Carolina the good that she’s been doing, and she would never tell us negative thoughts or actions, she was always positive, we only found out she got into a fight after the prison told us, and when we asked her about it she said that she was too bright of a person to be incarcerated in a place so dark.
Hey there Anthony,
I am so very touched reading your comment.
So sorry for your Mom, I guess that’s how she loved you both, she didn’t want to make you both sad so she only told you the good things. May she rests in peace.
I hope your sister is getting better and you too are stronger and braver everyday.
Hey, you must be a big fan for The Fast and Furious sequel. I know it from your handle: Brian O’Connor. I like him too….it was too sad that Paul Walker died so early.
Thank you for the support, I really do apprecieate it she is in a better place, somewhere watching over Carolina and I somewhere, and Yes I do like The fast and the Furious, I have every movie, I’m going to buy the new one Hobbs & Shaw soon, and Paul Walker… Man he still is my favorite actor, then there is Mathew M. I don’t know how to spell his last name but he plays in the movie Sahara and Interstellar, and then Matt Damon, Vin Desil, I like lots of actors but Paul is always gonna be my favorite, that’s why I love to drive because I mostly grew up watching Nascar and racing movies,
She is in heaven, believe that and amen….
Cool, because I watched almost all the movies too, it was since Paul Walker still young. I still remember clearly how Brian and Dominic started to like each other. I haven’t watched the Hobbs and Shaw. I’ll look for it too. I still watched his movies too and I just watched his Eight Bellow last week, it was the second time I watched that movie. The dogs in that movie makes me happy-sad-happy again…poor them.
Mathew McConaughey…it is a bit hard to spell, I watched his many movies too and I like Matt Damon too, they are very talented actors.
I like Paul but my favorite actor is still Tom Hardy….:))
Sorry, I have to go.
Talk to you soon, Anthony.
Take care.
You too, Hope to see you soon be safe
I am so sorry for all the pain and suffering.
It’s ok, it’s over now and she is in a better place, thank you for the support
responses received will mostly be false…people claiming to have gone to prison…will not be all that quick to “brag” about it….those who haven’t very well, may….tell a fib..of being in prison to be COOL. the popCULTure has that effect on you! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5258ffdbfceb8f7ea9248487fb60d21225203b169fe2f52996d0a4d1b80aecfd.jpg
Stay transparent. Stay neutral (no ganging). Don’t gossip. Keep your nose clean.
i have one of these in my purse in case if i ever get arrested ! XD https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/8e76bb5108cbcde338d9adcb022948c8d7e465453e20f87815329896d854ed90.gif
You knucklehead ! That’s a super good one !!
Ha ha cute!
I was having a rethink on this and I thought at first it meant sentenced to jail as such, then, noticed others referring to just being in a holding cell at the local cop shop.
It that is to be included, well yes I have been and it was because I was at a protest. Held there for 5 hours. That was back in 2003.
I’ve never been arrested lol.
However I do know people who have been to Prison for a number of years.
Honestly I’m not afraid of inmates, what bothers me would be not having your freedom. You can’t eat, sleep, or do anything without supervision or permission. It’s like I’m in Elementary, but for adults.
You lose your personal security. I would never sleep.
Last year I found out a guy I knew in school went to jail for GBH. Recently, his sentence got extended because someone came forward with a sexual assault allegation. The guy was a year older than me and very smart. He would often just do stupid stuff on nights out. Bit of a waste really
GBH?
I was wondering too. lol
Grievous bodily harm. He punched someone in the face and broke his jaw.
No one knows what that was…LOL
GBH = Grievous Bodily Harm..:)
It’s new to me
I just looked it up and apparently the term is used only here in the UK – in English criminal law.
Sounds good for a topic as each country must have their own term for it…*Laughing.
I didn’t know that was a term in the criminal justice system. What country is that?
England. Apparently itβs not used anywhere else.
Hey,
Great that you have the chance to come here…*Smile
Thanks, hoping to post again soon – just need to think of a topic. Hope youβre well π
Hops so too, but no pressure.
Disqus has been glitching anyway, like now. I can’t download notification properly.
I’ve been well, work and be here in the evening.
When I see you come here, I am assuming that you at your post, not travelling.
Yes, I know people who’ve gone to prison. They had plenty of opportunities to change before getting smacked down. As for me, they’d have to catch me first.
Technically yes I was. It was a work release facility but still is an Iowa Department of Corrections minimum security penitentiary.
Went there for my third DUI in 96 on a five year sentence. The way that breaks down here, specifically for 3rd DUIs, I spent 6 months there and was on parole until I paid off my fine which took two years after getting out.
I did almost get sent to a maximum security prison while in there three times, once for not waking up to go to rehab and twice for instigating fights. Had either dude I talked shit to tried to fight me or had I woke up late one more time they would have sent my ass away for 9 months and then I would have had to restart the six months work release.
It’s lame!!! People that don’t care if they get sent to prison are more nuts than me!!!π€£π€£π€£π€£
Hi JAG,
Thank you for joining, Bro,
You’ve been on our white list, but I think I put too many words on the auto filtering, that what made your comment went to pending. I’ll review the restricted words again then..;))
Those are funny jail stories …=D
Those didn’t make you an ex inmate.
Iowa ? Me born in Ames (Cyclones ) . Did primary School in urbandale//Des Moines. Now here in Sh1tcago.
ive never been to jail or prison myself , i have a uncle who is dad’s brother thats serving some time in prison im not sure how that works he’ll be paroled in 8 months i dont think he’ll have his house still when he gets out ? (foreclosed /unable to work payfor it while in prison ? )? or if the dept of corrections sends him to like a halfway house to get him on his feet again ?
I know a guy who ended up in a maximum security federal prison where over half the inmates were serving life sentences. He said you could literally be killed for insulting someone.
This same person is back in prison now … in state prison …
Some people never learn …. or they like crappy food and gangs and watching other grown men poop ….. I don’t understand people who return to prison
Its so sad
so are you a good boy Mr Higgins and never been to jail before ?
I went. Was only a year in minimum security.
What did you do?…:))
Turned 18 before my high school girlfriend.
A young heart, got a valuable lesson….
That’s a tough one. Half of US States now have Romeo and Juliet laws on the books. Hopefully they all will in short time.
Yeah happened in 93. In Oregon. No age of consent. So even though she was a sophomore and I a senior, off to jail I went.
They passed their Romeo and Juliet law in 2017.
I didn’t check on whether or not prior convictions which would not be prosecuted under the current law can be expunged. Just a thought.
nope! i don’t think i’d survive.
Great, you aren’t a trouble maker…:)
??
Thinking we won’t survive in the jail, that prevents us from doing things that could cause us to go there.
hmm, not sure that works, or that i would do anything anyways.
If I went to prison, I’d be absolutely screwed.
Nope.Got a good lawyer every time.
π»π
having traveled the world many times over i’ve always been fascinated by stories of ex-patriots who wind up behind bars. to get an idea of their ordeal i highly recommend watching the ‘locked up abroad’ series. enjoy.
warning: not for the faint of heart.
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=locked+up+abroad
I watched that! It was so sad. Some of them deserved it others didnβt but had to suffer because they were in another country and the lawyers were crap. Itβs much different than being locked up in your own country, being able to hire an attorney or get a state appointed attorney. Having people visit you and being able to write or call others, get money for canteen, phone cards etc. they can even buy TVβs. Itβs like a crowded home away from home with added dangers.
That show is awesome. However, it’s a shame some people can be so easily duped or forced into doing something illicit.
the lure of the illicit can sometimes be overpowering.
Not just expatriates, but a great many tourists as well. If fact, more foreigners who are not bona fide expatriates get locked up.
The uniform weft thread that is woven within all their stories is the sameβ¦a
complete disregard and ignorance of the sovereign laws of each nation.
Our famous, or infamous (depending on your point of view) prison here in Bali is called Kerobokan Prison. It houses both male and female inmates. Although they each have a distinctly separate section of the sprawling compound, there are certain scheduled times when the populations of both sections are allowed to socially mix.
Kerobokan houses both local as well as foreign inmates.
This is a photo of the jail cell of one of Kerobokanβs most well known past βcelebrityβ inmates, Schapelle Corby, an Australian beauty queen who spent 9 years incarcerated in Kerobokan for smuggling a large quantity of marijuana into Bali.
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/3a87de7d8d7f9615701544397a36dada43d84e84c687184d0fca3bc4a895e913.jpg
The new building after renovation looks more like an apartment….:))
Heather Mack (killed mother & stashed in suitcase) had her baby there and has a few more yrs to go. She was treated like a celebrity . Lot of bad drugs there.
Nope. Did a few hours in the drunk tank and got out with a court summons for DWI, though, but this was back when I was young and stupid. Believe it when they tell you a drunken-driving tag is going to set you back at least $12,000, because it wasnβt much cheaper than that in inflation-adjusted 1980s dollars. It goes without saying that I never did it again.
Nowadays it’s pert near $20,000 USD.
Prison, no. Jail ,yes. There is a huge difference.
Recommended.
I have never been to prison, apart from to visit people IN prison. I suppose only Timmy here would know about Long Bay Gaol but there was a friend who was incarcerated, I visited weekly. Just going through the process as a visitor was intense there. It was a HARD CORE facility for inmates.
Also visited a friend who was in Paramatta Goal. Again, not a “slap on the wrist” style facility.
I have no tips rather than that from a visitors perspective. Even visiting places like those is scary but when you care about someone, you do it regardless.
Have I been in jail, yes. Have I been in prison, no. The American system is complicated.
I have been taken home in the back of a “divi van”. π
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5Cw043lPCE
Pretty much.
Ok so they tool you to jail, questioned you and then took you home?
Um… Sure. They had a case, they couldn’t support it. π
Oh I was just a little shitfaced out one night. I was probably flirting with the cops ( as I was shitfaced) and they wanted to get me home ok. π
I admit though I HAVE been questioned by cops at other times and purely due to the company I kept at the time. Again another thing Timmy would have at least heard about. I worked in a pub where local bikies used to hang out… Gypsy Jokers, Comancheros and Banditos. Notorious gangs down here. Even if you Google those gang names, there’s ….some intense stuff. The friend I mentioned I visited in Paramatta Gaol was a member of the Gypsy Jokers. ( RIP Colin). He was killed over gang stuff.
I won’t ask any more re the lack of support. lol
LOLOL!!! I’m going to start typing, “You’re going home in the back of a divy van” to other Aussies just to see how they respond.
You should. That said, if they are in their late teens or mid 20’s, they may not understand the reference. π
Hahaha!
Hi, Kizzy!!
Hey they that are not named. lol
How are you today/tonight/… Sunday? π
I’m okay. Getting a little hungry. You?
Just had dinner actually. π

Was good.
I wouldn’t mind your recipe as they are 3 awesome things you have right there in your bowl. π
Um, I can’t cook. It came from a can. LOLOLOL!!! That steak looks terrific!
Me and my plebeian cuisine are going to sleep now. I’ll catch up with you later, Chef Kizzy. Hugzzz!
I haz a three cheese soup with spinach and tortellini.
Iβve only been in holding cells.

I have not dealt with such issues in real life.
I guess I am lucky…:))
But have heard many horrible stories about prison.
I’ve been assuming that prison is the hell on earth.

Yes, I know many people that has spent time in prison. The survival tip I learned, try to stay out! π
No doubt. I had some fraternity brothers back in the day who managed to spend the night in the lockup down in New Orleans. They said that was no kind of fun and breakfast in jail sucks.
i’ve been to the bang kwang prison outside bangkok, thailand…err as a visitor and not as an inmate. went to visit some american prisoners, provide reading material and to hear their stories. needless to say it’s a pretty scary place.
Good morning desertpatriot,
That sounds to be a huge support mentally for your friends, it must be more pleasing than anything for them. How lucky they were to have you as they friends that time.
well, to be honest they were not my friends. in fact, we were complete strangers. i just didn’t want to see them suffer so we (a group of american expats) ventured into the compound as visitors with a stack of magazines for them to read. most were caught at the airport smuggling drugs out of the country. most were waiting for a king’s pardon which would release them from jail. without the pardon they would have a very long stay.
Wow. I think 20/20 did a story on that one. There’s alot of pedos doing time there.
keep the pedos locked up for life.
i have known a few people who had been in jail,, as well as prison. including co workers and aquaintancses, and ive also known former prison guards, and other staff. also have known people who later went to prison for dumb things,,
Not yet.
not to worry ….
me and the boys in the 420th would bail you out
Hello Stan,
How are you doing?
great Murn … how are you ?
Good to hear, Stan.
I’ve been well too, thank you.

Have fun with your thread. *Smile
please share with us the importance and the relevance of telling the world about your facial appointment.
Just so you know, Murni (aka Murn) is the owner of this channel. Sheβs an Indonesian who has built herself a very successful cargo shipping business here on Bali. As is common with many SE Asians, she is ultra polite and friendly. ;<)
thumbs down
As Murni wrote to you, “I hope you can have fun and find friends here…:)”
If not, no problem. The choice is yours. ;<)
thumbs down
I’ll be happy to give you some time to consider what I wrote.
We “play” nice on this channel…which is the way Murni insists upon.
I’m curious myself as to why a few commenters are here knowing they aren’t welcome to act as they have before.
I also see a few ex-Disqus posters here itching to create trouble. Making this place like the channels they came from. Especially as this place grows in popularity.
I can see someone downvoted your comment! ππ This channel is entirely too kind for their jaded souls. They need a little light in their life, but too damaged to receive it. I hope you’re well. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/618c201347e5991b26eb0ca1196a1bfdf2a139b72ff9b301eea1b0c71735d6a1.png
It’s entertaining. As long as it is only that, I’m cool with it. But as was made clear by you and others, the mods should ban those who insist on being trolls.
I understand some venting. And am willing to listen. I like to understand why a person is in a bad spot.
But incessant toxicity is something else. Then it’s gratuitous and needs to be shut out. Some folks sadly thrive on being toxic. It’s really a form of bullying.
Murn’s got a handle on the trolls, but the downvoting is hilarious. Even if the person is ever revealed, they’re so deeply unhappy they’ll find a way. ππ
Not everyone is being downvoted. Murn is 100% a target but I see they’ve left my comments alone as well as a few others. I’m probably one of the more abrasive commenters on here so it’s curious they leave mine alone.
I didn’t escape the down voting wrath. I’ve got some enemies across Disqus. Some folks take this all too seriously. Jeez.
I like this channel best because it’s laid back and cool. The trolls can stew in the hot juices of their anger.
π
I can almost guarantee that while I don’t consider them enemies, I have offended my fair share of users so the fact that I’ve escaped their downvotes makes me uber curious because they’re vindictive. I mean they downvoted Murn of all people so they have no limits.
Hey LIli,
Downvoting has been happening on some other sites too.
I hope to see who does all that.
Ok, someone is still in their Disqus channel feelings. π
Hi, Roy!
It’s telling a good friend, nothing wrong with that.
Welcome to our site.
I hope you can have fun and find friends here…:)
Later.
glad to be here. looking forward to your announcement of a pedicure appointment.
You clearly got up on the wrong side of the bed.
π
Lighten up man. Tell me about your coffee. I like a Starbucks Pike Place roast with cream and sugar in the mornings.
i was being ficicious -i sometimes display a warped sense of humor that throws people off. no harm, no fowl.
i absolutely looooooove coffee. unfortunately my gut ones not so i must restrain from drinking it ;>/
note: while trecking through central america a few years back i stumbled upon a coffee plantation and immediately signed up for a tour. consumed a gallon it seems of different flavors of coffee and never experienced a problem with the gut. why? the answer remains elusive.
Said like a gentleman. Welcome my friend.
π
Coffee is my one vice, as I even temper my wine drinking. I give the riot act to my wife if my coffee capsules and cream aren’t available. I’m not the same without this.
BTW: I can get personal and political on other channels. Fairly, at least I believe. But here we keep partisan and identity politics out. As well as even acerbic wit.
This channel to me is interesting not least because it forces us to be subtle, creative, and artistic about expressiveness. We find a there’s actually a lot to talk about outside partisan and identity politics…and serious human commonality. Wish RL were like this.
A very creative topic, Josh. :))
Thank you! I once had a crazy landlord who had spent significant time in prison. I unknowingly also had a roommate who spent most of his adult life incarcerated. Yikes!
Hey, Josh,
I can only get here now. I tried yesterday then it was glitching again and again and now too.
Well as long as they acted normal and not like some crazy inmates in the jail, and they treated you well, I guess that’s fine, right? Although here, most people would avoid getting along with ex-convicts but I believe, they aren’t all bad.
I didn’t choose them. It happened by chance. The landlord disclosed that info about himself to me after I got to know him. At the time, he told me I was the only person in the building he respected because I was in the process of earning a college degree.
The other situation involved two roommates. One occupant was trying to fill two rooms and did not tell me about the other guy. I am not even sure they knew when we all began rooming together. Once we found out, I was not amused. However, the ex-convict wasn’t a bad guy. He has a mental illness but would only hurt someone if they were really getting on his nerves on purpose.
He trusted you, Josh. He must know too that you deserve the respect as you are.
Good to know on the ex-convict, he wasn’t danger to the people around him.
Morning…hehe

I once got a letter from someone in prison. He was not my boyfriend but I didn’t write him back.
That must be a surprise letter asking for a help?
He was very troubled and had a flash temper. It was a surprise for sure, lol
Great that you didn’t write back.
He would look for you after he’s free if you did.
Morning, Laura…..:))
I do remember his name though. Who knows where he may be.
Thank you.
Look him up for kicks, if you’re comfortable. One of my gf always has me looking up people of past and current il Dept of correction’s inmates . Some reclused and some did make success.
I would’ve had a defense criminal attorney look at it. Sometimes inmates may need to outreach for help they’re not getting . This happens randomly .
I was a young adult, it was 30 years ago. Wish I had kept it.
Oh wow. These days you can look em up. 30 yrs ago is scary since you were a young lady , fresh out of the dorm room and settling into your own place alone. π
He didn’t do anything to me. But red flags warnings were there. Like shooting a gun on a highway from a moving car. He also spoke of going underground…
Dang there might be a story there to write on.
