–by Matthew Dunnyeg
One of the most common complaints I hear on Disqus is about being censored or banned for no apparent reason. A complaint by another poster is what prompted this OP.
Sometimes we are censored for relatively obvious reasons. While not all posting sites may directly state as much, the most obvious way to avoid being censored is to mind our manners and morals. This includes not being personaly abusive toward other posters, using vulgar or obscene language or images, not doxing others or ourselves, and stating what are considered to be obvious untruths as fact with no supporting evidence. But what happens when we adhere to this common sense attitude toward manners and still get censored?
Sometimes we get censored because of the intolerance of site owners for dissenting opinions. There is little that can be done about this other than finding another place to post and spreading word about this site’s intolerance. When this happens, instead of getting upset, we should be happy; it means the censor has no intelligent response to our arguments. This means we won.
But what happens when we mind our manners and morals, and the website is on the same side of the political fence we are? While stories about censorship are welcome on this OP, these mystery censorship incidents are what this OP is really all about. For example, many posting sites will have key words that will prompt automatic censoring. And since human censors either have bad attitudes or are bored, the chances of one of these posts being approved aren’t good.
Sometimes the keywords that prompt censoring software aren’t very obvious. Over at Breitbart, trying to be humorous with the obviously humorless, I wrote on an offshoring story that if congress is going to offshore our jobs, we should respond in kind by importing congressman for $150 a month from the Punjab. Guess what? That post was censored and it turns out that I was censored because I used “Punjab”, which is hardly an obvious choice. I know this because I reposted my comment changing every keyword except Punjab only to have my post censored again. My experiences have been even worse at other sites, and on both sides of the political spectrum.
So, what I would like to hear about are specific words that will get us censored at specific sites. There is no use writing up posts that aren’t going to be published. This OP will be published on several sites. If I get good enough responses, I will write up another OP with the results so we know what the rules of posting sites are even if they don’t have the courtesy to inform us about such things. If you have something to say on this matter, please let us hear from you.
Well…pee pee, caca, doo doo.
While I ‘AM’, and always ‘HAVE BEEN’, a firm believer in expressing one’s own viewpoints and one’s own voice, I did learn some time ago earlier on, when I first signed up on “DISQUS”, that there is a time for expressing yourself, and that there’s also a time for being a “PRAGMATIST”. And what that last part means, we should all think about what we’re going to write on here before we actually do post it, and that way we don’t get in trouble for saying something that might get us banned or whatever, you dig?
100% agree.
Thank you very much, kind sir or ma’am! LOL!
Digger, if you are talking about holding back on the political content of speech, I couldn’t disagree with you more. The First Amendment’s recognition of freedom of expression was written expressly to protect unpopular political speech.
If you are talking about good manners, I fully agree. We should all express ourselves without being vulgar, nasty, or abusive.
Well, Matthew, unfortunately for you and I and everyone here on MNC, the rules are quite clear: we cannot bring our political, or even our religious, viewpoints into the discussionary equation. And, if we don’t follow the rules, we could have total “ANARCHY”, and I’m certain that you don’t want that, am I right, dude?
As we discussed earlier, there’s a time and a place to fight battles. Hence our social appeal on this kind of community to not bring in partisan and identity politics. At best, they can be discussed abstractly, without naming specific sides, avoiding the kind of strife that plagues modern social media and society.
Even the most tact and diplomacy sometimes offends with specifics. Not worth pursuing it at a social event.
All this brings back sad memories of watching some of my good friends from getting unjustly banned. For one of them, I even wanted to write the mods a letter requesting he be reinstated. I was advised that it probably wouldn’t work so I walked away from those two bad sites and rarely comment there but instead restrict myself to giving upvotes and downvotes there.
Marco, I fully understand. I’m banned from sites I’ve never posted on! I’m not sure anything can be done about these sites; the best thing we can do is to avoid them. We need to concentrate on not getting banned on sites that are a little more reasonable.

Many untruths were considered to be obviously true. The idea of a static Earth comes to mind. Proving that the Earth moves turned out to be quite difficult. A moving Earth best fits the available evidence, but not in the minds of those who will not consider a perspective differing from the one of their childhood indoctrination.
As salamu alaikum what community are you hiding in?
I don’t hide. My profile is open.
You haven’t spoke what community are you with?
The communities I frequent can be found here:
https://disqus.com/by/sophiasadek/
This is precisely why I stipulated “without supporting evidence”. Speaking just for myself, there are few more enjoyable experiences than seeing someone buck the conventional wisdom and being able to support those contentions.
It’s also worth adding that morality is indeed something handed down to us from childhood. And considering that all morality, including political correctness, originate as arguments from authority, it is all very necessary indoctrination. Problems arise when rational matters are treated as moral matters, and vice versa.
Well said, Brother Matthew, sadly, I’m sure Miss Sadek will figure out
some way to convince herself that your views are representative of a
small minority of the bitter Bible-clinging, gun-toting troglodytes.
I thought that ‘discussion blocking’ was the digression of the thread manager😎
Good to see you, brother…and I envy your composition skills, as ever. 😉
I tend to post only here, but I did take a moment to look at what you ask. A quick scan of the basic blacklist entries from both WordPress and YouTube turned up one odd word, Sandler.
Both lists have it, and I am puzzled as to why…Urban Dictionary offered no help either.

Thought to include a few links about global censorship, with a brief descriptor:
A quick and easy map to familiarize the reader with navigation, click your country:

That is very helpful.
Thank you for the very informative links.
I’ll check them out too….*Smile & Good morning
Evening, sweet one…as you know, I have near zero experience with social media yet Dunnyveg is a phenomenal resource and I am driven to contribute something, however trivial. *smile
I know, social media is an alien for you…
Dunny is not only a phenomenal resources, he is your friend on here, it makes you take the time to post for your friend. I thought you have started to be that super busy? -:)
It’s not yet 8am…and I’m hovering a bit first with some joe. *laughs
Ahhh yes, it’s only 07:59.
You woke very early as I check the time of that email came in about 3 hours ago.
Indeed, much to accomplish this week and my mind is in that mode. 😉
It sounds like a huge task but you have fun with it.:)
You know me, hectic is my normal and this should make for some fun. 😉
Do something after those have passed….*Smile
Then it’s time for my favorite holidays…and more busy days ahead. *smile
Holiday then back to busy again, not all busy. It’s imbalance…:)
This is my version of balance…and besides, it beats sitting alone in a cabin on a mountain while dwelling on days gone by. My life is best lived busy, no slip sliding away. *smile
Understood and me too….*Smile
I had some joe this morning.
Trying the very pure and original coffee from Toraja…:))
Just reading a bit about your coffee, sounds delicious. I have a Kona roastery very close to this location and it serves my needs perfectly. 🙂
Toraja is an area up in the mountain in this country and they have difference climate with much richer soil that according to experts, it grows coffee to their best and highest standard. it really taste different than the regular coffee I’ve been having so far.
I did a quick check on your Kona Roastery too, it’s the best there. But you only want all to be the best so yes, that’s perfect for you.
….:)) https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c98a4f6ed8aadd6d96f70fe25bf9052155843d79f34204774dcff797f81fb426.jpg

Yes, that’s it.
Great source of the link.
Hero of all coffee…:))
I found it informative…and you found my roastery, well done!! 🙂
We both did great for our coffee, although we are more tea people…:))
Variety is Life’s true spice…and we are the lucky ones for it too. *grin
True and we are thankful for that.
Our Hero….meanwhile, we reach a 100 :))

Good number for our great friend! *smile
Now it’s time for me to redd up this desk and fill up my brief. You enjoy a wonderful evening, one complete with sweet dreams, little darlin.
Yes, I am glad he made it.
Please go, honey.
I still have some minutes left before bed and need to move to other threads.
Have a safe busy day.
Brother Merlin, thank you for the links; I’m going through them.
As for “Sandler”, my best guess is that’s a spam thing. Sandler training is for those in sales, as well as something that is sold itself.
Interesting, and good to know as it’s picking at me mind. *grin

Gotta love the border collie pics. Mine is curled up at my feet as I type this.
Those are so cute.
Especially number 2. I wish my cat can be that calm when bathing.
That’s a bunny !!
Bunny…..that’s why so calm.
Boing 🐰 he’s got those cute Ears !! I had a bunny , such a messy delight !
I didn’t pay attention to his ears.
I have never got one but you make me think about having it and if I do get one, i would prefer the all white one.
Are they easy to take care of?
No. Unless you have yardage. The cats played nice with him. They like oats, vegetables . They do okay grooming themselves, but you gotta wash their privates. If you have fine furniture, don’t let them in the “no touch” rooms. Read up on today’s pet rabbit. I had mine 10 yrs ago. They love to cuddle on your lap or up by your neck. He used to snore in my ear !!
This is a good coincidence that I saw white bunny couple days ago and I thought to myself to maybe want to have it so my cat would have a difference friend…and that doesn’t sound hard to take care of. My cat too is 10 years now. I will think about it more seriously after the holiday.
Thanks for the wonderful companion. Enjoy the rest of your day, Lily.
I’ll be off soon….:))

I just got this tag. Disqus is running poorly, again.
Testing.
You got a go…
Banned for no reason and without telling the person why he/she was banned, it doesn’t sound fair to me but I often found out that the Mods on certain channel knowing that particular person was banned on other channels for the comments he/she made or for the behaviors he/she showed or for the fight he/she had, so rather than having the same issue with that person on their channel, they hit the ban
I have made it clear on the site rules here that someone should not be banned for their behaviors on other channel without them showing the same behaviors here and without them violating this site rules.
Murn, all I can say is good for you. While I hate imperialism in any form, one American ideal I’d like to see the rest of the world embrace–as well as a lot more Americans–is the presumption of innocence. We should all have the right to be treated as if we’ve done nothing wrong until we actually do something wrong.
Thank you again.
Yes, we have no right to sentence someone, there must always be that presumption of innocence until they are proven to do something wrong. Otherwise, they may embrace the jungle rule.
This is precisely why MNC does not allow political or religious content.
How about sexual content? That’s another big area for censorship.
These are at the top of the prohibition list on this site.
* nudity-pornography-vulgarity;
* bigotry; racism; intolerantly; rants,
* personal attacks; bashing, discrediting; hatred.
FYI
https://myneutralchannel.com/channel-rules/
Murn, all I can say is good for you. At least you make the rules clear. This way the rest of us can make an intelligent decision as to whether we want to post at your site or go elsewhere.
I suspect the reason so many sites won’t post the things they will censor or ban posters for is that they are ashamed of their own intolerance.
Thank you,
We don’t want headache nor do we want contributors to have questions of what they can or can’t post. I hope those simple rules tell them clear enough.
Hahaha! We don’t do vulgarity here, so please mind your posts.
It is near impossible to avoid censorship on channels pushing a particular view. Unfortunately that happens on many Disqus channels. This one is a notable exception: mostly because partisan and identity politics don’t feature here and we therefore attract kinder and gentler behavior.
I got banned on a few Disqus channels for no reason whatsoever: The Atlantic, Love Stinks, and some right wing channels. On other channels moderators warn me of impending censorship if I didn’t agree with their ideology, whereupon I simply stop posting there.
I don’t believe in staying and fighting. Mostly because there’s no point when dialogue is short circuited and moderated. But also because communities actually should have safe spaces. If they want an echo chamber, so be it. It’s not worth fighting over.
Also, some people post from pain, anger, loss, struggle, sickness, and loneliness. Again, I give them their space. I rarely read anything decisive from somebody’s Disqus behavior. I give the benefit of the doubt that maybe Disqus is their break from reality, where they can be a bit more expressive and venting.
All good. Lots of communities to find a place to chat. I like this one.
IM, I agree that it’s always good to have a place to let one’s hair down, so to speak–such as this site. But I also believe we have a moral duty to speak truth to power. In the words of a certain idol of mine, evil only triumphs when good people do nothing.
I agree. But some discussions are not worth the social agitation situationally. And on matters of religion and politics, a lot of discussions are intrinsically nonsensical…particularly when pushing partisan or identity politics.
This is the scourge of modern social media life. So many act with a self righteous surety that old fire and brimstone Bible thumpers envy! Don’t get me wrong, as I consider myself Christian, but I am not a fanatic…be it about faith, race, ethnicity, or nation.
I’m only fanatical about my sports teams and food!
😉
IM, I do understand. We tend to be fanatical about the things that are important to us. A brief anecdote out of a history book will illustrate my point:
In the run-up to the Civil War, northerners were fond of saying, “You practice your religion your way, and we’ll practice our religion our way”. The Southerners retorted, “You practice your religion your way and we’ll practice our religion God’s way”. In other words, religion was very important to Southerners, but not so much to northerners.
Dear Mr.@Dunnyveg:disqus
Thank you for contributing with your beautiful writing.
Invites are sent.
Did we have some trouble?
First, thank you for the nice words, Murn.
Jay, my problem is that I’m typing on an old iMac. It simply refuses to work and play well with Realms.
My pleasure.
Nothing, it was Dunny’s post and the Disqus glitch
Good, I just wanted to make sure.
