“Far and Away is the tale of Joseph Donnelly and Shannon Christie, their journey from Ireland to Boston and finally to the unclaimed land of the Oklahoma territory. Shannon and Joseph’s attraction to one another from their first encounter develops into love and creates an additional theme to the film’s mostly accurate portrayal of the life of immigrants. The couple is faced with numerous challenges as they try to get to their destination as the thousands of Irish men and women did back in the nineteenth century. The film depicts Irish immigration in the late nineteenth century when the number of Irish entries into the United States was low, which gives an untraditional portrayal of Irish immigration in an era after the Great Famine. Ron Howard’s Far and Away is a mostly accurate historical film, although it occasionally puts the love story between Shannon and Joseph in the forefront to ensure it entices the audience to continue watching to see what happens to the young couple…….”

Though I enjoy both actors, this was one of a few times when I stood up and walked out of the cinema with a film half finished.
That’s quite understandable as it is not something like Poldark …:))
It was ok
good cast
https://youtu.be/1gnU9zlu-Mg
True, good cast and a good tale too.
I’m sorry to say that I didn’t think much of the movie, because I didn’t quite understand the plot of the film, or the scenes or the dialogues of the characters. However, I did enjoy the theme song, “BOOK OF DAYS”, by ENYA.
Nocole Kidmann is great. The male lead does his job. The historical scenery and the way it is filmed and the costuming, any one of them would make it worth watching without the well written story line and well written dialogue. America is the new land where land is given away and that is happening no where else and people can start from nothing and escape being wage slaves or serfs all their lives. An opportunity not available in the countries these immigrants came from is available for those brave enough and hard working enough to try it.
It is worth watching and very motivating.
Anyone can reach their dream as long as they try and work hard to reach it.
I watched it when it came out, a bit young so was more focused on my date so can’t really remember much about it…. Thanks for the reminder, think i’ll watch it again when I get a chance.
It sounds like you were necking in the back row.
More than that..It was at a drive in theater……😁
That explains it.
😱 !!
I can imagine what happened there that time…=D
Haha..fun times =D
It’s great to experience that kind of moment that we won’t forget…:))
Haha…..you need to watch it again then…=D
Sorry to move away from the historical angle but that’s the one in which Nicole Kidman removes a bowl to see Tom Cruise’s banana. Apparently that was done for real – she thought he’d be wearing something covering it but he wasn’t!
You focused on that scene, interesting. It makes me have a big smile.
Definitely. And l love it when l learnt she really did see it unexpectedly cos her expression tells you what she really thought of his willie.
Not really a fan of either. Nope, never saw it. I can’t tell you anything about it.
😀
worth seeing even if the lead actors do not excite you.
Maybe.
I never watched the whole thing. But I loved the song with the same way by Enya. And I was dating an Irish girl at the time. The one who eventually fleeced and dumped me! Ah, memories.
😂
Ok, silver lining. I got compared to Tom Cruise. And I am an actual immigrant to the USA. To some degree that worked.
😛
Haha…..was that a karma to get dumped ..=D
If all immigrants would work as hard as Joseph and Shannon or you, they would all be successful. Amen.
One of my all-time favorites!
Good morning Tim.
Glad to be in the same F&A movie fan.
The story about them being successfully claimed the land they dreamed for, is motivating.
Hello, my friend! Yes it is. The Irish had great difficulty immigrating to America in the 19th century. There are parts within this movie that depict how unwanted they were. It took the better part of a century for them to overcome and finally receive acceptance.
I believe not all them gained success like Joseph and Shannon, but that’s might be better for them than stayed in their land without owning a land.
Conditions in Ireland were far worse for many Irish. Under British rule, they were treated as second class citizens with virtually no rights. They were caught between a rock and a hard place, so to speak.
Sad to know. That’s why many of them left their country.
And America was their dream country for better future. Although some of them still lived in poverty that time as it was portrayed in the movie.
I grew up in a very Irish immigrant neighborhood. The Irish sure weren’t shy nor downtrodden. Definitely a people with serious fighting spirit.
We other communities, but the Irish were the most numerous and dominant. We had a healthy rivalry, me touting my Croatian heritage. When we got to our teens, our Croatian soccer team routinely beat the Irish teams in our semipro league.
😉
There are lots of Croatians now working in Ireland. How times have changed. Both countries are good places to live. But the Croatians and Irish uncommonly get along.
Today is SUNDAE day!
GOOD Sunday and HAPPY sundae, Ladies and Gentlemen!!

Nope. Never seen it. I am not a fan of Tom Cruise, imo he is very overrated. Also Nicole Kidman makes me cringe.
I like both of them as an actor and an actresses and they among the good ones in the film industry.
I thought Nicole is an asset for Australia to have a famous a good actress like her…:haha
Sure, Nicole is a big Hollywood star and very popular here. I like her enough, just not her acting.
That’s much appreciated tho.
Whos is your favorite actress who you think has great acting?
I like Meryl Streep and Susan Sarandon for senior actresses.
Both great choices. I like Cate Blanchett, she can play any role. Angelina Jolie is a natural. Geoffrey Rush is one of my all time favourite actors, along with Vincent D’Onofrio. Keira Knightley is also nice to watch.
Those are great choices.
I like Cate Blanchett too and watched many of her movies. Not really fan for Angelina Jolie but I do like Keira Knightley for young actress along with Natalie Portman, Amy Adams & Rachel McAdams. For actor: Tom Hardy is still my number one favorite..:))
Yes. Tom Hardy is lovely. I also like Toni Collette.
Toni Collette is great. She is a good musician too.
I remember her very well in The Sixth Sense.
Muriel’s Wedding was my favorite of her.
I missed that one.
I like her Japanese Story. It’s been a long time ago.
Angelina as “Gia” was phenomenal ! 👍👍
That was on HBO but I missed it….:(
Wasn’t she just!
Girl Interrupted was another one . Winona Ryder is also lead.
That one was good.
Both Winona and Angelina played really well in it.
“senior ” hahaha ! I did love Meryl in She Devil w Roseanne. Corny twisted movie hehe !
They are seniors compare to us, right? =D
I watched her many movies.
Is that Roseanne Barr?
Yes ! Knee slapping funny!
Absolutely loved her in To Die For – co starring Matt Dillion .
I don’t think I saw it.
Tom Cruise is a handsome man. Did a lot to advance the cause of shorter men. I’m a fan.
😉
A fan, and a shorter man, I imagine. Cute!
I’m 5’7″. Believe me, Tom Cruise made an impact. Pop culture can sometimes make an impact on what people try…and it so happened taller girls started dating me when guys like him made it more socially acceptable.
So you don’t like short girls? LOL
I like all girls.
😉
I just happened to wind up with a tall girl. A majority of the girls I dated were taller than me. It’s easy because I’m not a tall guy.
The funny thing is it was an occasional short girl who insisted she would only date a guy 6+ feet and that I was out on height. This happened more when I was younger, through college. But I dated shorter girls too. The shortest was 5’3″. My wife is 5’9″.
Superficiality aside, I grew up and actually did value character, integrity, and compatibility. No physical beauty can make up for a lack of that. There’s nothing like a good and faithful wife that makes you happy…and almost nothing can be worse having a horrible wife. Vice versa too, as some good women wind up with terrible men.
I’m not sure if Tom Cruise was a good husband?
🤔
Correct, all that matters is that we are happy together with our life partner. In harmony rather than in conflict, working toward building each other up instead of finding fault.
At 5’2″, I am tall compared with the women in my family, and the men are not much taller.
I’m Croatian and come from really tall people. My children are tall. My wife is Croatian and he family is tall as well. Skipped me somehow.
Given I hung around Croatians often enough, it was almost inevitable I’d up with a taller girl.
But like you said, it’s the harmony. Too many make the mistake of judging only on looks. I’ve seen some terrible breakups because of bad character masqueraded by good looks.
My good girlfriend used to marry Croatian and he was a very decent man. Do you have blue or green eyes? He had green eyes. They broke up but it was my friend’s fault, not his. Then he remarried with a little older lady but she was a very nice person, while my friend remarried with a very rough man. I thought, karma was on her side…=D
I’m green eyes. One of my Croatian friends married a Filipina. Both born abroad but have a nice life in the USA.
With 3 ex wives. I am not sure Tom was as a great husband as you to your wife.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qFlFmE_VVw&list=WL&index=5&t=94s
Ha ha. I guess you are right. Sorry if I sound like I’m bragging…but I’ve always been a good boyfriend and good husband.
I’m no saint, but I never abused women in any context. Tom Cruise evidently has issues here. Still, I like the idea of him…smooth, charismatic, and confident, at least in movies.
🙂
I don’t see bragging there, it’s only confidence…=D
tom cruise is a closet homosexual. why do you think nicole left him and he joined the scientiolgy cult. same goes with john travolta.
I thought she was great in “Days of Thunder” (1990). 😎
That’s where Tom & Nicole met and lead them to married.
That’s one that makes me cringe the most. LOL
Actually, I mostly remember the car races. But she was pretty smokin’, no doubt about that. 😜
In that case, you really need to watch BMX Bandits. 😉

Sounds like it wasn’t your favorite movie..:)
No, never heard of that
It’s a bit old movie based on a tale story.
is it good?
Yes, it is good.
I’d recommend it..
Tom Cruise and Nicole’s acting are mostly satisfying.
Yeah, I did
Great. How did you like it?
I mean sometimes when there was a drama scene, the girl (I forgot her name) was just unimpressive but otherwise it was great
No, I haven’t.
G’day! Long time no see!
Good morning!
It’s good evening from me!
Good to see you, JAF…:))
Selamat malam Murn. Saya senang melihatmu juga. 😀
Senang melihat anda, JAF.
Selamat berhari Minggu.

Tak apa! 😀
say what?
Saya baru melihat ini dan tertawa lepassss…..=DDD
..:))
Hi Collectivist.
It’s quite an old movie from 1992.
I’d recommend it.
O.k. Ty.
Most welcome.

Once, I think. 🤔
Once is great.
I watched it twice and still want to watch it again when I have the chance.
How did you like it?
It was good, but I haven’t seen it in a long time. 😁
Kind of forget.
Understood..=D
I watched it and liked it.
I got the knowledge from watching it.
I never knew before that the majority of farmers in Ireland in the nineteenth century were under the control of landlords, they were not being able to own their own land, lived in poverty with little money that could not provide enough for their family. The desire to own land and their hope for a better life were the reasons to leave their country for America. Most of the part are motivating and I’d always like their acting in most of their movies.
Sounds good. I put it on my bucket list!
Great.
I hope you’ll like it.
