“If you’ve been told you’re “leadership material,” it may be due to these principles. If not, this is the standard to shoot for, whether you’re looking to develop yourself as a leader or looking to hire people with the capacity to transform the workplace. Here’s the question:
Which of these have you heard others say make you a good leader?
1. You connect exceptionally well with people.
2. You involve all kinds of people and make them feel psychologically safe.
3. You show compassion.
4. You are open and transparent.
5. You understand human motivation and what makes people tick.”

I’m 19 but l’m pleased to say l’m a “team leader” among the part-timers at the swimming pool l work at.
OK that’s only 3 ppl but it’s a start!
Yes, that is a great start.
You are building a career.
Good luck.
Seriously I have no idea :O
NWZ! How are you my dear friend. I thought I would never see you again. ๐ค
Hey dear, that’s so sweet of you to say, I had to come spy on you ๐
Hahaha…glad I have someoneโs attention. XD. Good night sweetie.
Hey, you are the leader of your subordinates….hehe
I am so happy to have you back.
I hope, others will come back soon.
And it’s so difficult for me to handle my subordinates. Seriously, I am an execution person, haven’t still learned good leadership
Only thing that makes someone a leader is people are willing to follow. People can be given any title. Only a leader can lead.
What… besides my dashing good looks?
A good grip & somewhat manipulative (cool & in control).
Cool and in control are great. I can put those on the list too.
If you want to . Or if you feel it’s strong. Finally, I’m crashing …zzzzz. Listen , you have a wonderful day !! Ttysoon !
Oh I am sorry to know that.
Get well soon, Lily.
Rest well.
Talk to you soon….*Hugs
I would have to say numbers #1 & 3 as a daily practice, but there are other qualities to being a leader including the list. To be a leader you must understand the people you are leading, TRUST is number one to being a good leader. The number one no…no…is to scoff people and make them feel bad, that come to you for insight.
I have found myself in leadership roles that I never thought I would be in. But I have also been on the opposite side.
Even when formally in a leadership role, I consider myself to be peer and subordinate as well. Leaders always have co-leaders. And any leader has a duty to the people he leads, being subordinated to this.
BTW: I consider myself an excellent follower. I excel at being the operations foil and detail to the naturally charismatic leader. I have no ego in a superior getting credit when I’m in the details and trenches…because they are the glue making it happen.
As I keep saying in this context, I’m not a toxic follower. Too many such people are. I have more of an issue with bad followers and peers than leaders.
Sometimes itโs inevitable to be thrusted in a leadership role. Whether we like it or not but in such a role we must lead by example. For that type of leader you must understand the position youโre in and the people you are leading.
I donโt think I was ever able to follow. But I am a good listener.
Agreed, I try to be as optimistic as humanly possible, not just as a leader but as a person.
I think these questions are okay but overall missing the mark. The most important attributes in my view to be a leader are 1) competence, good character, and willpower 2) charisma and diplomacy.
The 1st equips a person with the knowledge, ideas, and creativity to lead an endeavor. The 2nd inspires people to follow the leader as they question and verify. My observation is that most people don’t know a true versus false leader.
Too often we support on charisma over competence, supporting leaders who know all too well how to play the herd. Too often the competent don’t work on their charisma, which can actually be developed and honed.
This is especially true in politics today. The best and brightest opt for private industry. Too much hassle in the public sector. Not least because the electorate doesn’t know how to be judicious.
Also, you get some bad leaders in big companies. They can hide behind bureaucracy. But at least the firm overall is held to the invisible hand, meaning somebody has to lead and work effectively.
My take is less people took part in activities that foster leadership and awareness of it. Like sports, chess club, being in the military, and working at a young age. I cringe at what passes for leadership…believe me, I’ve seen it blow up in the faces of betrayed supporters who foolishly expected milk and honey.
This topic is one of my main critiques of general humanity. Part of the irrationality of the herd. Sorry if I sound offensive…but I’ll offend on a flourish: this irrationality creates deep investing opportunities as followers do silly things on cues from leaders, influencers, and experts.
The principle sign is that when you are in a group of people,no matter how informal, you find yourself in the leadership position.
That’s true. You behave and act as a leader to be listened and to be followed.
Leadership can’t be effectively self declared or individualized. It has to constantly be conferred and expanded.
True, It can’t be declared, but there are points that make us a good leader. It comes from within us, how we connect with others, how communicative we are, how resourcefulness. Even how we listen and serve others can’t be declared.
I agree.
Given how leadership has been so abused, historically, I tend to be suspicious of leadership seekers and monopolizers..
A good leader learns to follow and seeks co-leaders. Too many chefs spoil the soup, but more heads and hands, the merrier. We all bear the blame, or the glory, for the taste.
Yes, they don’t do things themselves unless in giving the example of how to be done,
They seek co-leader and share the knowledge.
A leader knows how to delegate responsibility; he or she or they can’t possibly do it all. Will never know it all.
Where and who are the people and places in which this knowledge exist?
Going the leadership route is certainly one way to get promoted. I spent most of my career as a librarian in a management/leadership role. It brought a lot of recognition and prestige since most people in the little town I worked in knew who I was despite being a newcomer. But this was a political job, which is something I really don’t care for.
Another way to move up is to be good at something. When I joined the USN as a teenager, I started out in intelligence. But when the USN discovered I could write, I ended my time in the USN with an officer’s billet despite being a junior enlisted man. I was assigned to write NATO and other official publications. Even though very few people knew what I was doing, it was a job I much preferred over leadership. No doubt some of those materials I wrote are still being used today even though nobody knows–or cares–who wrote this stuff up.
It’s all a matter of what we prefer.
Hey there Sir,

In our mad dash to make leaders out of everyone, society seems to have forgotten that certain people tend to be far more inclined towards the role than others and how much gosh darn work it is for anyone.
Correct. The people in charge love to delude themselves by claiming that with “discrimination” gone, anybody can rise to the top. Even if everybody were capable of rising to the top, what would a world of all chiefs and no Indians be like? Are those who don’t rise to the top entitled to any consideration at all?
We can learn much about leadership and accountability from New World indigenous cultures.
I’m under the impression that this site doesn’t allow politics. So, if you care to discuss “indigenous cultures” with me elsewhere, I’ll set you straight. Just let me know.
???
Actually, I’m going to write up an OP elsewhere using your first post to me, and why it is both factually and morally wrong. As a gentleman, I feel bound to ask if you want me to attribute this post to you, or would you prefer I used it anonymously?
If I don’t hear back from you, I’m going to assume you don’t wish to be embarrassed, and will use it anonymously.
Do your thing.
I assume we are both fighting to end plutocracy.
If you are interested, my OP on this will be up at Around the Table, my website, and Vampire Jesus’ website tomorrow morning. You can consider this a formal invitation to partake if you wish.
I’m giving you an upvote because ending plutocracy is what I’m all about.
Uh oh๐
Yes, we are more lifestyles…

No wonder, I have noticed that your writing style has been excellence, different.
I secretly learn from reading your comments.
Miss Murn, a wag once said that anybody who writes for any reason other than money is a fool. I must disagree. Affecting people’s lives for the better is the ultimate compensation as far as I’m concerned.
Yes, it’s more mentally satisfying than material, and the prize is heaven later, not cash.
Yep, I’m a big fan of real Stoic ethics, which aren’t based upon Epictetus’ cornerstone that we shouldn’t concern ourselves with things not in our power. The real cornerstone of Stoicism is to live according to nature.
What it means to live according to nature is to live according to our human natures. I’m a firm believer that we are at our happiest when we behave as the moral beings it is our nature to be. Conversely, we can’t be happy when we suffer from a guilty conscience.
Yes, act according to our moral and our conscience without coercion, without pretentiousness.
Only the first of your items are relevant to leadership selection. The rest of the items are all about self affirmation within groups rather than competence which is why so many groups design camels rather than cars for transportation.
Don’t forget that camels used to be competence before the cars were found.
Riding camels were more competence than on foot at a time.
Kradek, I think the first thing we need to keep in mind is that politics is the art of getting what we want from people over whom we exercise no formal authority. All too often the first casualty of politics is truth since getting what we want from others often entails telling them what they want to hear.
While this approach can certainly make others happy–at least briefly–the job of the good leader is to prevent foreseeable catastrophes rather than cause them. Seeing things clearly frequently means doing things that aren’t politically popular. This is why when the proverbial committee comes up with a camel while trying to design a horse while a military-style hierarchical chain of command can frequently get it right.
It’s interesting that you and most libertarians have that opinion despite the Austrian school of economics, the underpinning of libertarian stupidity, saying that larger groups make better decisions than smaller. That’s the justification for markets.
Kradek, as I told you on appropriate forums before, I really hope you’re saving and investing whilst your criticize our great capital markets. I bought some more AAPL when markets tanked past December. Here’s how it has performed.
date shares total_price $/share
26-Dec-2018 20 $2,981.95 $148.69 basis
14-Feb-2019 0.086 $14.16 $170.20 div
16-May-2019 0.08 $15.47 $187.73 div
15-Aug-2019 0.075 $15.53 $208.34 div
A $2,981.95 basis is now worth $5,231.60, a 75.44% return on 91.03% CAGR. I think your average Austrian would applaud. Forget those Austrians at school!
๐
I’m an average retail investor. You can be too. In keeping with the theme of this thread, I hope I have the leadership by example to compel you to do the same…and give our USA and its capital markets some love and a chance.
Here’s something from Lady Liberty. With her love.
๐
Guys, remember, no politics please.
Kradek, discussing politics is something that is frowned upon here.
If you care to find out what I actually think of libertarian politics, I’ve written a number of posts on it. You can start here for a series of posts I wrote just a few days ago over at The Federalist:
https://thefederalist.com/2019/11/06/how-libertarianism-makes-people-susceptible-to-huge-government/#disqus_thread
Seeing things clearly frequently means doing things that aren’t politically popular.
A leader ultimately has to get buy in through a convincing narrative. You use directness as a last resort and hope it is effective. I used that unpopular directness sparingly in the military when absolutely necessary, but I learned the hard way not to in the corporate world.
I’ve been part of building that camel. I diplomatically posit the horse, but back away if it won’t resonate. Because I’ve seen peers and subordinates will turn on you.
Moreover, it can still be a good experience. I’ve been part of start-up companies that built the wrong thing. But we got paid well, developed skills and networks. Out of failure came more opportunity.
I guess what I’m saying is that a leader should strive to make the unpopular popular. Often you can. Be indirect and unpopular only when it egregiously is necessary. I’ve seen leaders and subordinates do what is politically popular as self promotion.
Just my 2 cents.
A good leader is someone who knows how to get results through his subordinates! This is perhaps the biggest fallacy in the corporate world. (Whoeverโs brainchild it is/was neglected to say โat any cost.โ)
Experience truths are the only truths that count when it comes to be a good leader, and a compassionate leader. The rest are sales talk.
WATCH AND LEARN WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE IN A GOOD LEADER.
In MHO, and I had 30 years+ in a leadership role, the qualities of a good leader is (1) The ability (I prefer to call it a blessing) to RAISE your own game to the level of being a genuine servant-leader.
(2) People must find you trustworthy, and that is earned.
(2) People must respect you, and that must be earned.
(3) Your own family life must be an example of being a servant mother/father.
I’ve never really enjoyed being a leader I prefer the more democratic process of everybody having a view and you agree with the overall opinion. In most of my jobs I’ve been second in command never really liked taking responsibility for other people but also like to be in a position where I have the authority to point out other peoples mistakes, that’s why a no.2 position has always suited me.
Generally, someone who has been in number two position wants to rise to number one because he already has the ability to do so. Your case sounds difference.
Hi Paul,
Good morning or afternoon or night…:))
Hello Murn,it’s 3.40 pm.
England….:))
Liverpool or Manchester United or Chelsea ? =D
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/aa1a0ac0d284596d1bb7c31b4246c2162f276c0405bc78ce1e81a00078de3160.png
Awesome.
I used to be fan for Man United, but Steven Gerard and team were the ones to come and played here, so that changed me to be fan to Liverpool then.
Liverpool are having a very good season.
I haven’t seen the match lately as to finish some TV series.
Downtown Abbey is one of them…:))
I’ve never watched Downton Abbey but l loved “Upstairs Downstairs”the original ,they made a remake years later which is rubbish. Very similar to Downton Abbey and probably one of the best TV shows ever made.
That one was much earlier and yes, it looks great.
I’ve never watched it.
It’s a show that will never age because the depiction of the time period is so accurate.
I did a quick search and found it was from 1971.
Not sure if I can still find it. It does look good.
There are lots of episodes on Youtube but sometimes they are not available in certain countries.
Yes, I often found good songs are blocked here.
But for movies or series, I rarely watch them on YouTube, almost never.
There is one brilliant show on Youtube at the moment called”Impulse” it’s on the youtube premium channel but the episodes for the first two series are now free.
Oh yes, I got recommendation for that one.
I will surely watch it and this will be the first I watch series on YT.
Thank you for the wonderful contribution for this thread.
Talk to you soon….:))
I am a Man fan. But what about Rugby? Go Bokke!!!…Lol.
I was very disappointed with England’s performance in the final but the best team won on the day.
Man utd,yes I better not say how much I enjoy seeing them get beat.
1995, 2007,2019. Now we have to wait for another 12 years!!!
I think England were great. They did us a favor by beating NZ.
I think that NZ game took a lot out of the England players but SA are a great team ,I thought they would go close to winning the world cup from the start of the tournament. England seem to have a problem when they get to finals even when we beat Australia we were strong favourites and only just managed to scrape over the line.
Generally, someone who has been in number two position wants to rise to number one because he already has the ability to do so. Your case sounds difference.
Hi Paul,
Good morning or afternoon or night…:))
You are correct about soliciting consensus. The tricky part is when majority consensus is wrong. A malcontent or two will distort and obstruct. Meaning you have to win over the majority.
Obviously if this happens a lot, a leader has to question himself. But I’ve seen good leaders sabotaged by subordinates to tank an enterprise. Even when they made it more democratic.
As I posted earlier, the herd can also be irrational as leaders can be abusive. It’s nuanced.
The great thing about leadership is that it can come in so many different ways.
True and a great leader makes the people around him/her feel safe and comfortable, not afraid
Recommended.
I would say all 5 points but I am a little on the fence as to 4; only that, sometimes it’s best to keep knit until a potential crisis is averted. After there has been a resolve though, I would tell people all and also explain to them why they were left in the dark. It’s pointless getting people upset or wound up, especially when there is nothing they can personally do to aid in any solution or resolve.
Keeping things to yourself also aids in points 2 and 3.
I’m meant to teach. While I possess all of those traits, it’s used in order to translate information in a way they can relate and understand. That’s all I can handle. Teach them to fish and be on your way.
lili!!! Hello ๐, I miss you! How have you been? Thatโs good to be able to teach. Some of us get caught up in the twisted mess of others and have to show them the right way to free themselves.
How are you lil mama? I’m not a therapist because I’ll tell someone exactly what’s wrong and how to fix it and they’ll be in my office the following week with the same problem. I prefer to teach children everything that I needed to be taught when I was a child. Once my son is out of the house, I may consider being a foster parent with the hopes of teaching damaged children that there is a light through the dark tunnel of childhood. No one is teaching our children positive coping skills to prepare them for adult situations. An adult, with a damaged childhood, will only be able to respond to adult situations from their experiences as a child because they don’t know any better.
Iโm great lili hope you are too! Thatโs true children can be taught and itโs really up to parents to do so. No one is a better, more understanding teacher than a parent. I was thinking of adults tho. You can only help guide them in the right direction they can make their own choices. Not like impressionable youngsters.
Exactly. They’re grown. They have a lot more to relearn that they were never taught, but they have to seek that help on their own.
๐๐ผ๐๐ผ True Ms. lili.๐ Iโve run into some adults that still have the mind of a child. I guess I was like that too coming from such a strict household. I had to learn the hard way, which I wouldnโt wish on a dog. I think thatโs why I have so much compassion for people and go out of my way to help in any way I can.
I’ve had to learn to be a better teacher. I was anything but natural. I do it best by example rather than instruction.
I continue to do my best to be a better teacher, but it’s a lifelong process for me.
Learning should be lifelong anyway. It’s a natural ability for me as I have a thirst for knowledge and sharing it. I strongly believe knowledge is power.
The first thing a leader needs is a thorough disdain for leadership.
True. The biggest and most classic danger to a leader is the seduction of power. A good leader tries to stay humble, self critical, and have an attitude of duty. A leader fulfills his contract to reasonable degree before being rewarded in reasonable proportion.
A leader should certainly not show weakness and frailty. But he needs more than ever to get buy in from more educated and bolder subordinates and peers. I was a US Army officer and see how even there this is the case, as you cannot be as direct.
I lead small top technology teams as a software engineer leading other engineers. I post here often how I look in a mirror to say: Clean yourself up! STFU! Earn your pay.
Oy, vey ist mir……….
I’ve been a leader most of my business career. Not all what it’s cracked up to be. Sure the pays great, but that’s not what it’s all about.
There must be moral satisfaction when you see your subordinates get better with your leadership, not just the big salary you got.
I prefer to think of it as, those I employ, work WITH me, rather than FOR me.
Also, even though I am CEO of my own business, I garner no salary at all. So it’s not about any big pay cheque for me at all. lol
That sounds good to create a team work rather than making who are the superiors and the subordinates.
But for me, I’d always look at how the character of the person, there was a time when I treated an employee like a friend, but she thought we were friends and that reduce her work performance.
I once felt very happy when my manager resigned and said that he wanted to try making his own business independently. With the knowledge and skills he gained while working with me, he is now successful and when there is an opportunity he stops by my office to say hello and have a small chat. He made me very proud to be able to educate him from scratch to have the ability to set up his own business.
You don’t take salary but you can take any amount anytime you need it..:))
For salary, I take monthly salary along with my staff, just enough for the expenses during one month, but if I need more I would usually take it again and consider it as entertainment costs or business travel expenses….:))
I want to make it patently clear that in the 12 and a half years my business has been open, I have never even taken 5 dollars out of it even for a petrol top up. Perhaps as my business is a NFP, it’s just an ethical standpoint I have. I have a side job doing voice work that “helps” in our household and am fortunately enough to have a husband who is paid well. Teachers are paid a decent salary here. He makes 6 figures PA I don’t “NEED IT” when the purpose of my business is to help those genuinely in need of even basics like a meal.
Also, as a NFP, it’s the character of an individual that gives them the “your hired” and a smile and a handshake. Their individual salary packages differ though monetarily but if full time or part time permanent staff, get 10 sick days, 4 weeks vacation PA. there are monthly bonuses for those going above and beyond.
I don’t consider any of these people friends and they don’t consider me one, but we work as a well oiled machine and respect is mutual.
Like you, I have people move on when they have honed enough skill to make it on their own; whether it moving on to a position that’s better for them and there are never grudges. In fact, it’s usually a matter of them thanking me for an opportunity to learn. I tend to employ people who other places wouldn’t even give a sideways glance to.
I have been an employee for PROFIT companies in the past and despite my actual business mentor being seen as an ogre ( to the media and such), he is the one who instilled in me my approach to business management and he was highly successful. NO one was “friends” but we were a TEAM. This man had thousands of employees but not once, was there never a gift for even a janitor on their birthday, across the board to everyone celebratory Hampers come “holiday seasons” and THANK YOU bonuses to reflect how much he appreciated those working “with” him.
Respect is a 2 way street and IF you respect those who work WITH YOU, then success follows.
May I ask what your business is, Murn?
I was joking about you taking any amount needed from your company…:)
It is good to hear that teacher was much appreciated with a high pay there. It is very contrary compared to here where teachers here are the lowest paid professions, especially teachers of government employee, that is why children rarely aspire to become teachers
It’s also good to know about NFP, I had no idea how this worked before.
With staffs, keeping my words and providing sufficient salary are my simple keys to keep them stay working for years, besides rewarding them with good and fair treatment.
As for the appreciation, the business people here are required to pay holiday allowances of one time salary or we call it the 13th salary in one year (Eid Al Fitr for Muslims, Christmas for Christian / Katholic, Seclusion day for Hindus etc). Other bonuses we usually give before the new year, whether outing together or a big meal with all staffs’ families or cash bonuses.
My main biz is an International Freight Forwarder but since Bali is an island where most suppliers do only supply the goods and they don’t provide many things needed for export, we do all from cargo pick up and deliveries, warehousing, packing, Full Container Consolidator, Customs brokerage, Shipping etc. We basically do everything from ex work Bali to foreign ports of destinations. US, Caribbean, Australia, Europe and Japan have been our biggest market all these years. I started my own in early 2005 until now. That’s not all, we have also been doing the purchases for some clients. This has mainly resulted through their own business activities in their countries do not allow their burden of time in coming to Indonesia themselves. I worked for other companies before too, from the English company to a national company. But I have always been in the same business.
simple…..I have the doughnuts and coffee…. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/6c59cd5b20083d35ef94a6c6f026d1e7a4c95ecf6fe738a28ea1ef90e0ae6b64.jpg

in a social setting yes…lol…eating sweets releases ‘feel good’ endorphins in the brain, so the one who provide that release is looked on with favor….yes, I used chemicals to achieve leadership….LOL..
LOL.
Eating sweets may release feel good whatever in the brain, but too much can turn it to fats in our blood.
that’s why to limit the doughnuts, it’s all part of the plan….bahahahaa

Mean you are a very independent person.
Cats are very independent animals.
It’s why for now I prefer to have a cat than a dog. But one day when I am retired I will want to have a Labrador.
Are you a self employed?
yes. never worked for a boss longer than two weeks
=D
Two weeks is a very short time.
If we have skills and experience, self employed is the best option.
So you can truly say: Nobody is my boss, therefor I am not a ‘slave’ to anybody, and nobody is my ‘slave’ and therefor I am nobody’s boss. Great!!
Haha… that is funny…=D
Apologies. The comment was meant for @itertermini:disqus
๐
Thanks,
Tag her there maybe?
Lucky you.
I’m with you. Right now is the only time in my life I haven’t had a boss; I’m a cattle rancher. But even when I had a job, I always did my best work alone and undisturbed.
For me, few things are more mind-numbing than meetings where much gets said but little gets done. The way I see things, a camel is indeed a horse designed by committee.
So you can truly say: Nobody is my boss, therefor I am not a ‘slave’ to anybody, and nobody is my ‘slave’ and therefor I am nobody’s boss. Great!!
Make it two! It is worth it.
Yes, true.
Two: male and female, this will make great breeding..:))
contrary to popular belief cats can be ‘herded’….much like humans….capture their attention span, and keep itโฆ.
๐โMorning!

I feel there are no such things as “signs,” as in predeterminism. What I believe we are really talking about are those who exhibit leadership qualities and traits.
The list you put up is quite good, btw. All good qualities for an individual or group to have.
I haven’t sent the invites for this….=DD
Morning, Bro.

Thank you to link me to this article…:))
Lol. A trick question?๐
I know right, it’s to make you come here…:)
But the point is if you are anything in those list mentioned in the OP or if you have other signs as a leader that are not in the OP. Confidence is not in the OP, I would say a leader has a high self confidence.
An important attribute: curiosity.
True
and a solution maker.
That’s why, if ‘eye’* ruled the world, I’d have a generalized youth council, constantly advising me. Children are generally curious.
*Not I.๐
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
These things I command you, that ye love one another.
John 15:16,17
Dear Carlos, please refrain from posting religious content on MNC. Thank you.
This has already been treated with Murn. Tks.
Morning Carlos,
And amen.
Thanks, Murn!
Afternoon, here! ๐
And now it is early in the morning there.
I am at the right world clock right now…:))
Have a good morning out there, Carlos.
๐
I’ll do it if you haven’t yet. No fair! You beat me to it! I was asleep.
Very well said No-Name.
I am neither a leader nor a follower ….. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/f6c1a1d0b31cb37e54d8938012539a8304597111f1cd11bb52d445ed91c71fc6.gif
So stay outa my way and keep off my bumper ๐
But even a self employed can’t do all things themselves, they need workers or assistants or people to help them and there you lead them.
I often listen to my wife ๐
But she don’t count … she is my wife
Sure, she isn’t the follower but I am wondering if you do it all yourself with no assistants at all?
