Yes, hello CL this does seem to work . Only aim to to stop hyperactive computer moderation where 1/2 of my replies are gone.
But I’ll only know it on a test.
Rather than write an essay to find it ‘pending’ I will use a few words to see if it sticks.
So pardon my french on the nest post 🙂
Hi, 21st Aug. this went into pending on reply. So I try post here:
Picking up on this and your comment on ‘vulgar’ just be careful with your your use of “Knackered”.
A knacker (or nacker) is ‘a person whose business is the disposal of dead
or unwanted animals’ (historically) and I assume this person was of a
low social status as it used as a term of abuse most often aimed what is
now called the ‘traveler community’ who were once called gypsies or
tinkers. Not exclusively used for them it is general to mean a person of
low repute/vulgar/ uncouth.
For example if you and your partner were to get into a train carriage and before you were loud foul mouthed, half dunk individuals ( the female proportion dressed like wh—s then you’d say to your partner “let’s get in to another place as I don’t was to sit there with the crowd of knackers”.
They readily use this word to each other as a sign of disdain if , to carry on the example, was to urinate on the platform he (let’s say ‘he’) would be called by the rest ” an F.ng knacker”.
So if you were attending a dinner in polite society I would not say
‘knackered’ as it has a whiff about it that you are no stranger to
vulgarity.
Better is tired, exhausted or for giggles ‘banjaked’ – a bit uncouth but acceptable. Saying ‘knackered’ is ok with family and friends.
Not only the misbehaving lower classes get called knackers but you might find your self living in an exclusive area and new neighbours move in and with all their finery and nice cars they behave like knackers (loud music, car doors slamming, shouting to each other when they are only a few feet away etc)….. not that you would let yourself down by saying that to their faces that they were behaving like knackers.
I think, I’ve exhausted that word.
Really quite interesting. I know the term, as I said, from watching British television productions. I had confirmed my understanding of the word by consulting a couple dictionaries, but those didn’t dive into the etymology at all. I didn’t know that there was a class of people in Britain that were relegated to dealing with carcasses. The notion of untouchables from India probably didn’t come at all as foreign to the British that colonized that country. Doubt I will be having an in-person conversation with any UK folks in the near future but I appreciate knowing that it would not be good to casually drop the expression. Thanks for the info!
I hope I didn’t offend you by using the word vulgar. Swearing just seems to slip out more and more easily as I age and serves to express so many of my thoughts anymore. Unfortunately I had our grandson in the car with me when a guy cut me off for a space at the gas pump that I’d been waiting quite a while for. I spontaneously uttered a few choice words. Our grandson immediately, from his car seat (he’s 5,) rebuked me for using a bad word and of course I praised him for knowing better. Then as soon as I dropped him off at home he told our daughter that I had used bad words in front of him. Life is almost always interesting.
How blessed are you with grand children.
You need not worry about their careers – as you did for your own kids- but just enjoy them as kids. I think grandparents have a special place who can without worries – just enjoy their growing up. I envy you.
Your 5y old put you in your place – priceless!
In the world we live in I am sure you treasure those moments – and let them last .. oh let then last.
You say something quite similar to what my wife frequently says. Grandkids are great because when they get to the point where they’re trying your patience you can just give them back to their parents. I really do invest a lot of myself in them nowadays. They are a big reason I keep going every day.
Thank you for the kind, sage words!
You can appreciate ‘your’ children without all the baggage of everyday worry.
— sorry due to family health issues here I am distracted from Disqus but value your friendship and engaging more when thing clear—
I’m so sorry to hear that your family are dealing with health problems. I wish a swift and good outcome. In the meantime, you know I’m just an old guy in retirement with little to want and few expectations. Get in touch when it is easy for you to do so. I’m always glad to hear from you and never have a clock set on when I think you should be doing so.
Again, best wishes for everything good.
Thanks for your kind understanding. I don’t know when this
cloud will lift.
Disqus commenting is something you have to be in the humour
of and sometimes it can be a distraction from cares but other times it can be
funny and suits a carefree disposition. I pivot between both.
With little to want in your old age (if you’ll forgive me that attribute) is a blessing and your expectations can not be higher than having wonderful children with grand kids as a topping on the cake!
Now you are not forced into meeting (job wise) people you don’t like or preening the ego of some boss.
This is a space in your life where you are truly free. You can say what you like – but people will ignore you as if you were “some crazy uncle”.
(I’ve a wicked sense of humour, I can’t smother it)
I have been called far worse here on Disqus. And you’re not too far off the mark, anyway, if at all.
I’m sorry to hear that the situation may be prolonged. I hope you have a circle of loved ones who can help with whatever you need. Again, my best wishes are with you.
checking my notifications – don’t seem to get to me.
. let me check something by posting this to myself
the true side of every individual…for some people its hard to see, coz they rarely shows up ……….but for some, its real blessing that they chose to live with it.
My soul sister Macarons –she is the most thoughtful, intelligent, and selfless person I have ever seen ; Love from my mother ; the strength and bravery from New Yorkers who have been trying our best to fight against Covid-19, and take good care of one another; the complexity and diversity of human experiences, etc.
THE most beautiful thing? I don’t know if this was THE most beautiful thing, but here goes … On our drive up the mountain to Skyline Drive in Virginia, we stopped and took a roadside trail that led up to a babbling brook. My little girl–then 5–had never seen one. I wanted her to put her feet in it and watch the minnows as I did when I was her age, so we sat on the rocks and that’s what we did. Then all of a sudden to the left of us, from around the bend in the river, came a huge cloud of Monarch butterflies–and they swirled in the air all around us, even alighting on us–it was awe-inspiring. And then they continued on down the brook.
I dunno. Maybe the Eiffel Tower, maybe Paris generally, or maybe my twin brothers lying naked on a rug when they were 6 months old? Aaaaaaaaaah l’m a softie really!
So glad you came to visit, though, and I hope you are well.
Hey Jann!! How are you? I know you are having a tough time with Coronavirus, ..lockdown,…work etc. I hope its getting better. The Channel is just as you know it. Murn was the original owner. NN might be confused with he info. I only owned it for a few weeks, about 2 years ago, and gave it back when I saw all the work needed.
She shut it all down a few months back, and after talking wit her, the idea is that I might run it, but its still her channel. We had fun back in 2016 days when everything was buzzing eh!! If I pick it up would you want to come back and start up the fun again?
One last try
Checking if I can post here.
I’m testing as you asked. It looks as though this reply will go through.
